Dramatically reducing time-to-market for RISC/ARM based SoC designs

London, June 29 2001 - Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe (FME), Frankfurt, Germany and Europe Technologies (ET), Sophia Antipolis, France, have pooled their resources to offer a solution which dramatically reduces time-to-market for RISC/ARM based System-on-Chip (SoC) designs.

The joint expertise of Fujitsu’s 0.25 micron technology and ET's well-known Fast Configurable Microchip® (FCM®) embedded technology platform and methodology enables Fujitsu and ET to provide embedded ASIC solutions for the fast growing ARM-based SoC market. This new concept provides to the customers a total solution with the best of system and design from ET, and the best of silicon technology from FME. With the automotive SoCs market, which is just beginning to ramp up, this is one of the first new developments of its kind to offer such a reduced time-to-market for customer applications.

Using a combination of Fujitsu’s renowned technology and a platform and methodology designed by Europe Technologies, the solution consists of the FCM2 emulation and fast prototyping platform, the peripheral chip and the core chip, which includes the ARM 7 core with Fujitsu’s and ET’s integrated technology.

As today’s designs are increasingly complex, inevitably prolonging verification time, a main constraint is to be able to reduce cost and time to market. Using this brand new solution a reduction of up to 50% can now be achieved, depending on the design. Customers can proceed with chip verification, software debugging and the hardware validation phase right from the start, with the new FCM2 providing powerful and efficient tools at all of these levels.

The FCM2 (Fast Configurable Microchip) peripheral chip includes many features, the most important being 6 USART’s (with J1587 protocol and smart card error detection features and LIN), CAN on-board, two 8-channel 10-bit A/D converters, four 10-bit D/A converters and one high speed Op Amp.

Günther Junge, Marketing and Application Manager for the Automotive Business Unit at Fujitsu commented ”This new design brings a new dimension to embedded RISC/ARM designs and looks set to revolutionalise the marketplace. Working together with Europe Technologies has proved to be a very beneficial relationship for both parties.”

Sghaier Noury, CEO of Europe Technologies confirmed “This new foundry collaboration with Fujitsu has indeed been very fruitful. FME’s wide technology portfolio, in addition to its European and world-wide sales support, and of course the fab facilities and process quality have added just the right qualities for bringing the new solution to market. Moreover, this is supported by some significant strategic convergence, since the automotive market segment in Europe for instance is in the heart of the strategy of both companies.”

This innovative solution is ideal for automotive applications, including body and dashboard control, car multimedia and telematics. It will be available for other applications such as, Smart Card and Metering, Home Video and Sound appliances and mobile communications during the second half of FY2001.

The technical support for the new solution is provided by ET design and application engineers, FME application engineers and contracted world-wide design houses.
