Software AG Owns 40.5% Of The Worldwide Market

Bracknell, UK, 03 June 2001 Software AG is ranked the clear leader in the XML and Virtual Database Management System (DBMS) Market in a report released by leading analyst firm, International Data Corporation (IDC). Software AG's Tamino, the first native XML database, leaps to the top with a 40.5% worldwide market share - doubling its 21% market share in last year's report.

IDC’s XML and Virtual Database Management System Market Forecast and Analysis 2001-2005 discusses the trends in the XML and virtual DBMS market in 2000 as well as the 1998-2000 XML and virtual DBMS software revenue and market shares for leading vendors. A five-year revenue forecast by geographic region and operating environment is also addressed in the report.

“The IDC report validates Software AG's worldwide leadership in the native XML database market and the company's pioneering leadership in the emerging XML technology market,” said Geoff Cooke, Country Manager, Software AG UK. “Since 1999, Software AG has been evangelising XML and its Tamino platform, which includes a multi-award winning native XML database, and it is clearly positioned to be a leading product for eBusiness.”

According to the report, the XML and virtual DBMS market “reflects the growing importance and presence of XML as a vehicle not only for business-to-business (B2B) transaction and content management, but for the encoding of transactional data passed from business function to business function.” The 2001 study raised the 2004 XML revenue forecast to an estimated $1.25 billion whereas its 2000 study estimated the forecast to be $700 million. This clearly indicates a growing awareness and need for XML in the IT-market.

The XML and Virtual Database Management System Market Forecast and Analysis, 2001-2005 report cites:

· In 2000, the worldwide XML and virtual DBMS market exploded by 667.7%, from $10 million in 1999 to $77 million in 2000.

· Software AG's Tamino product took over as leader in 2000 with a 40.5% market share in the worldwide XML and virtual DBMS market followed by products from eXcelon and Computer Associates.

· Tamino continues to dominate in Western Europe with a 67% share of the market, followed by North America where it has 17%. Software AG’s prospects in North America should improve with its recent reacquisition of SAGA Systems, Inc. and its SAGA Software, Inc. subsidiary, now renamed Software AG, Inc.

about XML

eXtensible Markup Language, XML, is an international standard for the interchange and storage of data. XML has a number of unique benefits: it is platform neutral and scalable, thereby providing the assurance that documents and data can be exchanged with absolute confidence. XML is self-describing, which means that data is tagged with a description of its content, making information understandable and useable when exchanged between parties. Finally, data encoded in XML is future proof and will withstand developments in software and hardware over time.
