Users to Benefit from Increased Application Availability and Optimised
Performance of Their Storage Infrastructure

LONDON (July 10, 2001) - BMC Software, Inc. [NYSE: BMC], the leading
provider of enterprise management, today announced a storage solution
designed to simplify the management of EMC Corporation's CLARiiON( FC4500
and FC4700 information storage arrays. The new solution, PATROL( for
CLARiiON(, is a Knowledge Module( that offers a clearer picture of the
user's storage infrastructure by providing a centralized view of information
storage resources.

BMC Software Knowledge Modules are the foundation of the company's leading
edge Application-Centric Storage Management(tm) (ACSM) approach, which has
received industry-wide acclaim. By implementing ACSM, organizations can
optimise storage resources by understanding the relationship between the
application and the storage resource layer. Such detailed storage resource
information provides a breakthrough ability to optimise an application's
performance allowing heavily accessed information to receive optimal disk
placement and sufficient network resources.

"The ability to efficiently manage enterprise storage resources is
absolutely crucial and necessary in today's business environment," said
Chris Gahagan, vice president and general manager, Recovery and Storage
Management, BMC Software. "Storage is a key component in maintaining
application uptime, and, consequently, organizations are looking for
integrated management. BMC Software's PATROL for CLARiiON is another
valuable solution that customers can utilize to increase application
availability and optimise the performance of their storage infrastructure."
"In today's business world, a company's most precious commodity is its
information," said Linda Wright, Senior Director of Global Alliances, EMC.
"In fact, the management of that information has become increasingly
important as customer storage requirements grow. Through the EMC
E- Infostructure( Developers Program and newly announced CLARiiON Command
Line Interfaces CLIs), we are working with BMC to integrate our products so that mutual
customers can better manage the explosion of information in their complex
environments."

Specifically, PATROL for CLARiiON allows users to analyse the configurations
of EMC CLARiiON FC4500 and FC4700 storage arrays, compare their performance
against user expectations, and locate areas that may need reconfiguring. In
addition, PATROL for CLARiiON collects essential, device-specific data to
supply that data to each successive layer of the ACSM technology stack, BMC
Software's unique storage management solution.

Key benefits:

* Simplifies management for BMC Software PATROL users of EMC CLARiiON FC4500
and FC4700 storage arrays;

* Provides a graphical view of the physical attributes of the storage
configuration and performance information for the CLARiiON storage system
through PATROL;

* Provides a centralized view of information storage resources, device
alerts, and events through integration with BMC Software's PATROL console
and the topology-oriented display provided by the PATROL Storage Console;

* Decreases diagnosis time by centrally monitoring and managing
array-specific storage alerts for PATROL user-defined thresholds; and

* Allows PATROL operators to isolate problems quickly by providing an
easy-to-use, menu based graphical user interface.
