Patented Auspex Architecture Ensures Peak Performance for Delivering Multimedia Files
Santa Clara, CA, July 12, 2001 — Auspex Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: ASPX), a provider of Network Attached Storage (NAS) solutions, announced today that China’s Shengli Oil Company has selected an Auspex data server to store and deliver video files for daily on-demand newscasts designed to keep more than 100,000 employees in hundreds of offices abreast of the latest corporate, industry and worldwide news. The company selected the Auspex filer over competitive systems because Auspex’s patented architecture and various optimization strategies speed the retrieval and delivery of large files.
Under Shengli Oil’s new corporate information system, an Auspex server installed at company headquarters will store streaming video files containing updates on the company’s activities in the second largest oil field in China, the operations of its parent company, general oil and gas exploration and production news, and worldwide news developments. The files will be accessible to company employees at any time on their PCs via Web browser, utilizing RealNetworks’ RealPlayer.
Auspex’s ability to efficiently store and serve the large rich media files of Shengli Oil’s application stems in part from a patented Functional Multi-Processing architecture that employs parallel processors to separate file system processing and disk I/O
requests from the tasks involved in delivering files to end users. The processor dedicated to media serving is therefore freed of operations that can slow throughput, minimizing dropped frames, pauses and other performance degradation problems.
In addition, Auspex expedites content delivery through the use of caching technology that makes it possible to serve more concurrent users efficiently by serving streaming media files in split streams. For applications requiring broad global distribution, a high-speed file copying utility included with the system software can be used to maintain files remotely in order to reduce the distance penalties of streaming files from only one location.
The Auspex system also offers the unique ability to support both TCP and UDP protocols natively, ensuring that content providers can take advantage of UDP’s speed and ability to maintain the media stream in the event of lost packets.
Shengli Oil has installed a 1.5TB Auspex file server that is scalable to multiple terabytes as the company’s data needs expand.
“Network Attached Storage has proven to be a better choice than either direct attached storage or SANs to meet the challenges of delivering large rich media files over the Internet,” said
Tom Garofalo, Vice President and Managing Director of Asia Pacific Operations for Auspex Systems. “The fact that Shengli Oil selected our NAS filer over the competition reflects the fact that our system is engineered to retrieve data and push it out to the network faster than any other vendor’s, enabling end users to have an efficient and trouble-free viewing experience.”
Auspex file servers are used by industries and enterprises to optimize storage management infrastructures and provide fast, reliable access to multi-terabytes of consolidated Unix and Windows data. Designed for customers with traditional business applications as well as corporate Internet sites, including those with dynamic business-to-business e-commerce functions, Auspex filers include a full suite of data management tools that ensure high availability, high-speed backup and replication, and maximum uptime. They also provide fast and seamless file sharing between Unix and Windows clients, with a unique restricted file permission that prevents unauthorized users from accessing protected files across platforms and a “one-world” view that synchronizes security and permissions on both platforms.
