Marlow, England – 16th July, 2001 – Trend Micro (NASDAQ: TMICD, TSE: 4704), a worldwide leader in network antivirus and Internet content security solutions, today announced Trend Micro ScanMailä for Microsoft Exchange 2000 (Version 5.1) will be available this week. ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange 2000 V5.1 takes full advantage of the Exchange 2000 enhancements included in service pack 1 (SP1), such as the new Microsoft virus-scanning Application Programming Interface (VS API) 2.0.

Developed for the enterprise and service provider markets, Trend Micro ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange 2000 V5.1 is a scalable, multi-threaded, high availability security product designed to protect organisations of any size against email-borne viruses in the Exchange 2000 environment.

What’s New in ScanMail for Exchange 2000 Version 5.1

ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange 2000 V5.1 provides complete content security protection for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server environments, regardless of what type of traffic enters the mail server. ScanMail performs complete inbound and outbound scanning of attachments and message body through SMTP, HTTP, MAPI, POP3 and IMAP4 protocols including Installable File System (IFS) and NTTP. This feature ensures that companies using Exchange 2000 as the messaging platform are protected against computer viruses and malicious code, regardless of the protocols utilised by the end user.

With full support of the new Microsoft VS API 2.0 and Windows 2000 Advanced Server, ScanMail for Exchange 2000 V5.1 now has access to all email properties, such as the sender, recipient, administrator, and subject, for enhanced notification and reporting capabilities. This advanced feature helps administrators quickly put a stop to new virus threats by enabling them to compile consolidated reporting and logging files detailing the virus incidents across their Exchange 2000 environment.

“We’re thrilled that Trend Micro is providing Exchange customers with improved virus protection through its support of our new VS API,” said Kevin McCuistion, Exchange group product manager at Microsoft Corp. “We understand that security is of paramount importance to Exchange customers and we are confident that ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange 2000 will protect the integrity of their e-mail communications.”

New ScriptTrap Technology

Trend Micro also announced today that it has further enhanced its virus detection capabilities in ScanMail for Exchange 2000 V5.1, and across the entire product line, by incorporating Trend Micro’s ScriptTrapTM technology into the company’s virus scanning engine. Following the lead of Trend Micro’s MacroTrapä technology, ScriptTrap is a module within the standard scan engine that identifies harmful scripts based on what they do, rather than how they are written. This virus scanning technique is known as heuristic scanning and has become an increasingly necessary component of effective virus detection and elimination because viruses themselves have become more sophisticated.

The functionality enables Trend Micro’s antivirus products to detect unknown script viruses generically and enhances the company’s existing ability to manage polymorphic script viruses. Script viruses are becoming more popular among virus writers and Trend Micro’s ScriptTrap can identify these types of viruses even when traditional pattern file detection is not available.

“Viruses and other malicious code carried by email through corporate firewalls can cause tremendous damage to organisations of all sizes in terms of lost information and time spent getting systems running again,” said Mark Levitt, research director for Collaborative Computing at IDC. “Antivirus solutions like Trend Micro's ScanMail for Exchange 2000 play a critical role in protecting against harmful emails transmitted by a variety of protocols.”

Additional ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Version 5.1 features
ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange 2000 V5.1 is part of Trend Micro’s comprehensive multi-layered approach to protecting organisations against the threat of computer viruses and other malicious code. The latest version of Trend Micro’s solution to protect the Microsoft Exchange 2000 environment includes several key features:

· Multi-threaded scanning process and memory scanning, which ensures high-performance, real-time scanning of attachments and full message body without significantly impacting the Exchange 2000 Server performance.

· Guaranteed interception and scanning of all attachments and message body content at the Information Store level before the user can access the message. This ensures that all potential threats are stopped before they are accidentally launched by the end user.

· Fully compliant with Microsoft Windows 2000 Advance Server Clustering to provide virus protection for clustered servers and ensures a secure, 24x7 messaging and collaboration environment even during fail-over. The solution supports both Active/Active clustering and Active/Passive clustering.

· ScanMail provides an easy-to-use remote management console that is available via a Windows- or Web-based interface, thereby saving the time and resources required to manage an antivirus solution for the Exchange 2000 Server. With ScanMail for Exchange 2000 administrators can manage the ScanMail application from virtually anywhere, regardless of physical location or platform.
