MaxAttach Exchange E-mail Relief Bundle Helps IT Managers Manage E-mail Storage
MaxtorÒ Corporation (NYSE: MXO) today announced that it has teamed with VERITAS Software Corporation (Nasdaq: VRTS) to offer a complete, cost-effective bundled solution for businesses to efficiently manage Microsoft Exchange e-mail storage. The solution offloads and automatically retrieves gigabyte-hungry e-mail attachments in a manner transparent to the user, resulting in fewer e-mail storage restrictions.
The bundle includes the Maxtor MaxAttachÔ NAS 4100, a network-attached storage solution (NAS) that adds up to 320GB of capacity, and VERITAS Remote Storageä for MicrosoftÒ Exchange to take e-mail attachments off of a company’s servers and store them remotely with easy retrieval. When implemented on the Microsoft Windows 2000 Powered MaxAttach running Server Appliance Kit 1.7, the solution enables centralised storage for offloading data from overcrowded Exchange servers. VERITAS Software’s solution places links to the attachment in the Microsoft Exchange databases; the links then call up the data from the Maxtor MaxAttach NAS 4100. The entire process is seamless, with users opening their e-mail attachments in the same click-of-the-mouse, easy manner they are already accustomed to.
“Microsoft Exchange was designed for sending and routing e-mails, not as a data repository,” explained Eric Kelly, president, Maxtor’s Network Systems Group. “The sheer volume of e-mail attachments, particularly those with rich-media content, can quickly fill up a Microsoft Exchange server. We teamed with VERITAS Software to provide an elegant solution for coping with e-mail overload without the additional complexity of adding more Microsoft Exchange servers to a network or limiting the size of users’ mailboxes.”
In addition to cost savings, customers will benefit from:
· Easy deployment. After a short configuration procedure, the combined solution functions automatically. With pre-configured hardware, the entire system can be added to a network in a few minutes. VERITAS Software also offers the free Data Analyser for Exchange tool to scan and report on the contents of the Exchange environment.
· Ease of use. End users don’t need to learn a new interface in order to retrieve their attachments because the VERITAS Remote Storage functions happen transparently.
· Increased Microsoft Exchange performance. With less old data to deal with, Exchange servers will work more efficiently and system administrators can perform Microsoft Exchange backups faster.
· Quicker disaster recovery. Migrating data from the Exchange server means less data to backup regularly and less data to restore. Links to the attachments are automatically recovered along with the data stored on the Maxtor MaxAttach NAS 4100.
· Increased efficiency. Up to 80 percent or more of the storage volume is removed from the Exchange server.
· Maxtor MaxAttach NAS 4100 high-availability features. RAID 5 support, dual 10/100 Ethernet ports for load balancing and fail-over capability, and an uninterrupted power supply port.
“The VERITAS-Maxtor bundled solution is a true communications solution for companies grappling with e-mail overload,” said John Maxwell, vice president of product marketing, VERITAS Software. “The MaxAttach NAS 4100 provides 16 times the storage capacity of
one Microsoft Exchange server, while VERITAS Remote Storage enables users to retrieve their attachments quickly and easily, in the same manner that they always have in the Microsoft Exchange environment.”
