Leading Children’s eBook Publisher Uses SealedMedia to Prevent Piracy and Unauthorized Distribution; Shrek eBooks First in Collection

SealedMedia, the first company to provide a cross-media solution for dynamically securing and selling content on the Internet, announces today that, an affiliate of Time Warner Trade Publishing, has selected its digital rights management (DRM) technology to protect multi-media interactive ebooks. With SealedMedia, is able to quickly and safely “seal” ebooks for online sale, without worrying about unauthorised usage, including “pass-a-long” distribution and screen grabs. An enhanced animated storybook and interactive activity book based on Dreamworks’ blockbuster summer movie hit, Shrek, is the first of the sealed books available and can be viewed at

“Because SealedMedia is the only DRM technology to support video, audio, images and text, it’s a perfect fit for our multi-media ebooks,” said Byron Preiss, CEO of and noted in Publishers Weekly as “the poster boy for digital convergence.” He adds: “Since most of our readers are kids, it was important that the software be very easy to use. That’s one of the main things we liked about SealedMedia’s client software – it was literally simple enough for a child to use, but did not sacrifice functionality.”

ipicturebooks is bringing reading into the digital era. The company’s ebook collection turns children onto the fun of reading with ebooks that use flash animation, music and text. But, since the nature of the Internet enables online content to be easily forwarded and distributed, needed a security solution that would only allow paying customers to view the books. And, because the books are marketed towards children, a smooth and easy customer experience was a must. After reviewing several DRM vendors currently on the market, SealedMedia’s technology was the only solution able to seal the interactive ebooks effectively.

“Sealing ebooks is a very exciting project for SealedMedia,” stated Martin Lambert, CTO of SealedMedia. “These enhanced ebooks take advantage of the best part of our technology – cross-media protection, ease-of-use, and flexibility.” officially launched in February 2001. Dedicated to providing high-quality ebooks based on children's books from several publishers, the company creates new books and offers out-of print-books in electronic form. Among the trade publishers, studios and literary agents committed to working with are: Henry Holt, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, Millbrook Press, Oxford University Press, Little, Brown, Two Can, Reader’s Digest, Charlesbridge, Gareth Stevens, Random House and Writer's House.

SealedMedia offers the only complete, easy-to-use, production-ready solution for sealing and managing the use of all types of online content, including music, video, text, video games, etc. Just as importantly, SealedMedia is the only Digital Rights Management company to recognise, in the design of its solution, that consumers paying for content deserve to view and use it from any computer – not just from the PC to which the content was originally downloaded. By sealing content using the wide variety of flexible and creative licensing methods available from SealedMedia, artists and distributors in the billion dollar market for interactive content can take the "free" out of the Internet media “free-for-all” – without penalising their customers or off-putting their prospects.

ipicturebooks is the #1 brand for children's ebooks on the Internet. It is designed to appeal to parents, children, teachers and librarians seeking in-print, out-of print and original enhanced e-books for use on home computers, school and library networked computers, proprietary and open hand-helds and dedicated ebook readers. It will sell e-books by individual downloaded copy, site licenses and subscription models. ipicturebooks will also introduce a variety of "enhanced" ebooks, ranging from original ebooks illustrated digitally, to "custom" ebooks in which a child's name appears to "e-pop up books" to ebooks with spoken text to ebooks with music and animation.
