London 30 July, 2001 - GIS 2001, the UK's leading spatial business intelligence exhibition and conference, in association with the AGI, have launched 'The Public Sector Information Zone' in association with National Land Use Database (NLUD), National Land Information Services (NLIS), National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG) and Intra-governmental Group on Geographical Information (IGGI).

The fundamental aim of the zone is to offer practical examples of how GIS can be used to deliver effective and joined-up government. It will provide a chance for both the private and public sector to catch up on the latest developments in key governmental GI initiatives.

Geoff May, Project Manager of the National Land Use Database (NLUD), commented: "There is a great deal mentioned today about joining up and modernising all levels of government. This zone will show it is fast becoming reality. Four important national initiatives will be combining to give visitors a very good insight into current developments.¨

Jessica Lonnkvist, Event Manager for GIS 2001 added: "As the leading spatial business intelligence exhibition and conference in the UK we are always looking to enhance visitor experiences every year. Working with these key government initiatives will give visitors an even more enhanced and knowledgeable experience while visiting the show.¨

'The Public Sector Information Zone' forms part of GIS 2001's educational programme where visitors will benefit from free educational areas and information zones designed to add value and make the event an informed, motivated and worthwhile experience.

Other Features, at GIS 2001 will include:

- The AGI Conference will offer high level workshops and case studies.

- The Consultancy Centre, sponsored by and in association with GEO Europe will offer free consultations by recognised applications experts.

Notes to Editors

About the IGGI

The Intra-governmental Group on Geographic Information is a Central Government body, which promotes the benefits of GI, best practice and, access to and exchange of GI.

About the NLIS

The National Land Information Service is a prime example of the Modernising Government Initiative in action. Implemented earlier this year, it is allowing people quicker and easier access to authoritative, accurate and comprehensive information on all land and property in the UK, initially to support the conveyancing process.

About the NLPG

The National Land and Property Gazetteer is an aggregation of Local Gazetteers maintained by each Local Authority. The NLPG enables unambiguous identification of land and property to provide a data-referencing framework for the vast majority of service delivery within local authorities, and across the public and private sector.

About the NLUD

The National Land Use Database has worked closely with Local Authorities since 1998 to provide the first comprehensive national assessment of previously developed land that may be available for redevelopment. The longer-term aim of the project is to develop a complete and consistent geographical record of land use that is kept up to date and delivers information that meets policy and business needs.
