Enterasys Uniquely Demonstrates Mobility Potential of its RoamAboutTM Wireless Solutions

NEWBURY, ENGLAND & MUNICH, GERMANY – Enterasys Networks™, a leader in secure, available and mobile enterprise communications solutions, today announced that the first Bavarian Internet beer garden will open its doors on July 31, 2001 in Munich, Germany. Via collaboration between Enterasys Networks, Waldwirtschaft Grosshesselohe beer garden and Radio Relax fm, visitors can enjoy a glass of beer whilst sending e-mails over the Internet or calling up news and information. The initiative will be achieved through the use of mobile Internet stations containing Compaq Armada E500 Notebook laptops, securely connected to the Internet via Enterasys’ RoamAboutTM wireless technology.

The “Wireless on the Net” project is a follow-up to Enterasys’ partnership with Yahoo Brazil for creation of the first Internet-enabled ice-cream cart (please see press release: Yahoo Brazil & Enterasys Networks Partner to Deliver World’s First Ice-Cream Cart Mobile Commerce Initiative). Together the innovative projects demonstrate the true mobility and versatility of Enterasys’ RoamAbout wireless solutions.

Jan Bause, Marketing Director for Central & Eastern Europe at Enterasys Networks, explains: “An Internet connection in a beer garden is of course an unusual example of mobility, however it has so many potential uses. You can process your e-mails, check flights, hire a car or book a hotel room. Perhaps you’ve forgotten someone’s birthday and want to quickly send a greetings card online. What we’re demonstrating with the Internet beer garden can be easily described: information is now available at a location where PCs are normally not available. It’s exactly these sorts of usage possibilities that will drive the Internet forwards in the future.”

Technical Implementation – No Cabling

Through the utilisation of Enterasys’ RoamAbout Wireless Outdoor solution, beer garden visitors can seamlessly access the Internet and online applications. The wireless installation encompasses OMNI antennas, part of the RoamAbout Outdoor solution, located at a central point in Waldwirtschaft Grosshesselohe beer garden and each Notebook housed with RoamAbout Access cards. Connectivity is achieved by means of radio frequency signals and 128-bit encryption ensures optimum security for Internet transactions.

Frank Baurmann, Managing Director of Enterasys Networks Deutschland, commented: “Enterasys Networks has always been ahead of the pack in the field of wireless technology. Our Wireless solutions are successful with corporate customers and in the health care and educational sectors as well as in manufacturing. With the world’s first Internet beer garden, we’re showing what Internet-based M-commerce can look like in practice.”

As part of its cooperation, Radio Relax fm is promoting the project with a daily prize draw. Relax fm listeners can win a voucher worth 50 DM for a snack in the beer garden.
