IDC places Trend Micro first with a 51% annual growth rate and finds market shift continues to favor company’s business model

Cupertino, CA – August 2, 2001 - An independent International Data Corporation (IDC) study of the antivirus software market found that Trend Micro Inc. (Nasdaq: TMIC, Tokyo Stock Exchange: 4704) is the world’s fastest growing antivirus vendor, with an “impressive” 51% year-on-year (1999-2000) growth rate. Trend Micro dramatically outpaced other antivirus vendors as a result of its strengths in Internet gateway, server and subscription-based antivirus technology.

The IDC study, "Worldwide Antivirus Software Market Forecast and Analysis, 2001-2005” presents a five year revenue forecast of the worldwide antivirus software market, along with key trends and the performance of the overall market and leading vendors in 2000.

The study forecasts a continued shift away from consumer to the corporate antivirus software market, with the majority of growth coming from the server and subscription markets which it estimates will combine to account for 70% of the antivirus market in 2005.

“It is gratifying to see the market so strongly reflecting Trend Micro’s vision,” said Steve Chang, Trend Micro’s chairman and CEO. “For years, we have recognized that the growth of the Internet and email would change the primary virus entry point from the desktop to the server, and now, according to IDC, it not only has, but will continue to do so at an explosive rate.”

To illustrate Trend Micro’s focus on the server, Chang said that less than 10% of Trend’s revenue came from the desktop.

“The industry’s fastest growing segment, the Web server segment (43% CAGR, 2000-2005), was actually defined by Trend Micro with their 1996 launch of InterScan VirusWall,” said Brian Burke, research analyst for Internet Security at IDC. “Trend’s technology advantage coupled with market leadership will enable them to take full advantage of the segment’s phenomenal growth.”

In addition to continued growth in server-based virus protection, the study also sees continued growth in subscription models for antivirus management, validating Trend Micro’s strategy of partnering with leading service providers such as Verizon, Qwest, Sprint, NTT Communications and Telstra.

According to IDC, Trend Micro was the only antivirus vendor with a revenue growth rate that more than doubled the industry average of 24% (1999-2000). By comparison, Network Associates (Nasdaq: NETA) grew by 6% and Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC) by 21%.
