Leading UK ISP & entertainment and leisure Web site selects
Time Navigator software to protect data assets
London, 9th August, 2001 - Quadratec, one of the world's leading providers
of backup and restore software for heterogeneous environments, today
announced that Virgin.net, the UK's number one entertainment & leisure Web
site and Internet Service Provider (ISP) has adopted Quadratec's Time
Navigator software for enterprise data protection.
Quadratec's Time Navigator backup and restore solution is now being used to
protect and preserve Virgin.net's enterprise data assets at the company's
Leicester Square (London) headquarters.
Storage networks impacted by the company's decision to adopt Quadratec Time
Navigator include Virgin.net's content management, data warehouse, CRM,
Oracle databases, and Java application server systems distributed across
three UK locations in Surrey and Central London.
These enterprise systems support Virgin.net's corporate operations centre,
which drives, manages, designs, and markets the immensely popular UK
entertainment & leisure portal. The Virgin.Net Web site currently receives
1.5 million users and over 20 million page impressions monthly.
MEETING DATA CENTRE REQUIREMENTS
Virgin.net officials point to broad multi-platform support, centralised
management, and compatibility with virtually all popular storage
architectures, network protocols, and security models as reasons for their
selection of Quadratec's Time Navigator over other leading enterprise backup
"We are Solaris focused, but also use Microsoft and Linux platforms where
they make sense," says Daniel Hulsmann, director of development and
production at Virgin.net, in London. "Cross-platform support was important.
We also wanted to collate our data centrally, and keep it secure."
Virgin.net officials also cite Time Navigator's graphical user interface,
visual file versioning, and redundant delta cataloguing as key advantages of
Quadratec's offering versus other leading backup software vendors.
"Being able to see all versions of a backed-up file or folder over a period
of time is a fantastic feature," Hulsmann says. "It makes restoring very
quick and straightforward. And the cataloguing function makes it very easy
to find and restore the data you're after."
PROTECTING MODERN STORAGE NETWORKS
Quadratec's Time Navigator 3.5 software is now being used by Virgin.net to
maintain an operational availability level of 99.99%, with a maximum
allowable downtime window of 4 hours, excluding system boot time.
Backup data is sent to large third-party tape array with several hundred
server tapes fed into it, cycled on a regular basis with a remote off-site
facility. Total storage capacity in use is 500G (half a terabyte), with
160G in "modified" data being backed up daily.
"We are delighted that Virgin.net has chosen Quadratec," says Manuel
Michel-Tur, director of business development, Quadratec. "This is another
confirmation that Time Navigator perfectly meets the needs of leading
Internet services providers providing state-of-the-art backup and restore
capabilities to ensure maximum data availability for their customers."
