Net Searchers, the online brand protection specialist, today announced that it has successfully gained over 95% of the .info domain names applied for by its clients in the first two rounds of allocations.

During the sunrise period, which runs from 25 July to 27 August, trademark owners may submit their marks as domain name applications, processed by Afilias, the registry operator, using a randomised, round-robin system.

Tom Turcan, Managing Director of Net Searchers, commented, “We have been able to provide an excellent success rate on behalf of clients because we have dedicated our registrar operations to corporate owners of intellectual property. This increases the probability of success when our applications are submitted to Afilias. We will be continuing this policy when non-trademark applications are accepted, and with the other new gTLDs such as .biz and .name .”

The news arrives amidst criticism that Afilias has accepted many fraudulent applications, where no trademark exists for the requested domain name.

Tom Turcan continued, “There has been a lot of recent speculation about the volume of fraudulent applications which have been successful in the sunrise period, the result being that some corporations with legitimate trademark rights may have lost out. Fraudulent registrations can be challenged through the Sunrise Dispute Resolution Procedure (SDRP) where successful claimants holding a trademark for the name will be allocated the disputed domain.”

Net Searchers has managed to further increase the number of successful registrations made on behalf of clients through its Managed Multiple Applications Service. This allows companies to improve their chances of securing a particular domain name through the strategic submission of multiple applications. Using its industry experience and insider knowledge of the registrar community, Net Searchers developed a shortlist of accredited registrars who are most likely to result in a successful application.

.INFO is the first unrestricted top-level domain since .COM and is expected to go live on the Internet around 19 September 2001. Applications will open to non-trademark holders around the 12 September 2001.
