PETAH TIKVA, ISRAEL, 15 August, 2001-- Lightscape Networks, an ECI Telecom company (ECI Telecom: NASDAQ/NM symbol: ECIL) and an international leader in optical networking, today announced that it has signed a contract to supply one of the world’s largest local exchange carriers with next-generation optical networking technology. Open Joint-Stock Company ‘Moscow City Telephone Network’ (OJSC ‘MGTS’, Russia), which provides access to the public network for other services providers, will implement Lightscape Networks XDM™ intelligent, hybrid optical platform within its metropolitan area network to eliminate bottlenecks and to support regional voice, data and broadband services.

This move represents the latest development in an ongoing project by MGTS to invest in and improve its network, building upon the previous deployment of several hundred SDH multiplexers from ECI Telecom’s Lightscape Networks. The implementation of Lightscape Networks’ XDM optical platform will greatly increase the capacity of its interconnecting rings, whilst offering advanced optical networking features and support for multiple network topologies. Benefits from this initiative will include a faster, more flexible and scalable infrastructure, 100 per cent compatibility with MGTS’ existing operating equipment and comprehensive end-to-end traffic management.

Mr Vladimir Lagutin, MGTS’ general manager, commented, “MGTS is committed to delivering unmatched speed and functionality within our existing services, whilst enabling the next-generation services of tomorrow. To fulfill this type of activity we are deploying the best innovative technology that the industry has to offer.” He continued, “Lightscape Networks’ XDM platform provides us with a robust, flexible solution for supporting high capacity traffic today, as well as providing an immediate and cost-effective option for supporting an entire range of broadband services and transport technologies far into the future.”

The unparalleled scalability built into the XDM system represents a key advantage to MGTS in its development of new services. The system’s breakthrough, single platform architecture enables it to be upgraded whilst in service using cards that are slotted into the basic unit to give instant capacity increases or easy, cost-effective migration to optical services without the need for years of forward planning. Eran Dariel, president and CEO of Lightscape Networks, stated, “Our ongoing partnership ensures that MGTS can take advantage of advanced functionality such as fully integrated DWDM, support for multiple SDH rings (from STM-1 to STM-64), support for multiple data protocols, distributed DXC (digital cross connect) and end-to-end provisioning. At the same time our solutions are designed to future proof MGTS’ network, thereby protecting its investment.” He added, “It is a great compliment to our company and our technology that we are part of the development plans of such a major telecommunications force.”

Lightscape Networks’ XDM platform provides carriers with an easy migration path to next-generation broadband services and multi-service support within a single data-aware device, offering carriers with one of the widest capacity ranges on today’s market within a single shelf. Designed specifically for the metropolitan area environment, XDM offers a cost-effective way of connecting multi-service broadband subscribers to the transport backbone without requiring a massive initial investment in numerous discrete systems (DWDM multiplexers, SDH/SONET ADMs, edge data switching and optical switching). XDM is the only multi-function metro platform for voice, video and data that scales cost effectively to 10Gbps, for both ring and mesh architectures.
