IBM today announced the launch of its e-Student programme providing UK university students access to the benefits of mobile computing. Working with university authorities IBM is providing students with significant discounts on selected models from its ThinkPad range of laptop computers. In addition to these discounts, IBM has made an agreement with Lloyds TSB who will (1) be able to offer registered students a personal loan at competitive rates specifically for their IT needs.
Under the e-Student Programme IBM will work with universities to choose from the entire range of ThinkPad computers, to provide students with discounted rates on selected models. IBM has already negotiated a deal with University of Portsmouth.
"Students now have an excellent opportunity to add to the high quality IT facilities that we provide for all of our students. Most of our students want their own computer and this agreement brings this within their reach. Everybody living in University accommodation has a link to the University computer network - they now have the real flexibility of choosing where and hen they want to work, send emails and access the Internet." Mike Bateman, Pro Vice- Chancellor, University of Portsmouth.
"PCs have long been an essential tool for university students but few students can afford to take advantage of the benefits of mobile computing," said Ken Batty, Head of marketing, Personal Computing Division. "Under the e-Student Programme universities can provide the best financial deal for their students and by focusing on a select number of ThinkPads can ensure that the IT support is in place for those models."
Lloyds TSB is also announcing its support for the e-Student Programme by offering a personal loan tailored specifically to students interested in buying a discounted ThinkPad. The loan is for #1,000 at an annual percentage rate of 13.7%, repayable over 36 months.
"Having a personal computer is increasingly becoming a necessity for all students going into higher education but the typical cost of a computer represents a large portion of any student's budget," said Andy Gunn, Head of Personal Loans, Lloyds TSB. "We hope that our IT loan, in conjunction with IBM's e-Student Programme will make buying a laptop less daunting for any students serious about their studies and will cost them little more than a pound a day."
