CompuServe Network Services (CNS) today announced that it
now offers dedicated ISDN backup to its European customers.
The system activates automatically if the customer's Frame
Relay connection fails and ensures that network downtime is
minimised. It also eliminates overheads incurred by largely
unused alternative or redundant leased backup circuits. This
is another example of CNS's commitment to shielding its
customers from the risks and costs associated with managing
a global communications network. To that end, customers are
charged a simple start up charge and a monthly fee.

"Even though Frame Relay links are inherently stable, should
one fail, our customers need to have peace of mind knowing
that their business critical applications will not be
interrupted," said Andrew Carver, managing director,
CompuServe Network Services Europe. "We aim to minimise any
risk, whenever possible in the provision of global
communication networks for our customers. The ISDN backup is
fully managed by our Network Control Centre team and
customers are notified when a backup is activated."

CNS has, after an extensive test period, chosen Controlware
Communications' TAXI ISDN backup product. TAXI monitors
network performance and redirects traffic if a fault is
detected in the Frame Relay line. It automatically alerts
the user when the backup service is activated and again when
the Frame relay connection is reinstalled. The TAXI system
has full International PTT approvals and is supported
throughout the world. TAXI is capable of backing up leased
lines from 64 - 256 kpbs across Europe and fully integrates
with existing CNS products.

"TAXI provides excellent line-fault handling, network
management and reliability," continued Carver. "As the
winner of this year's Communications Week award for Best New
Carrier, it was important to us that we chose a partner with
a commitment to quality and reliability that matches our
own."

"Controlware is the market leader in the provision of ISDN
back-up equipment," said Paul Carter, managing director,
Controlware Communications Systems Ltd. "CompuServe Network
Services operates a critical network requiring the highest
level of operating time. Our TAXI system enables the maximum
possible up-time by monitoring leased line circuits and
immediately switching to ISDN back-up circuits in the event
of leased line failure." - ends -
