The number of home Internet users in the UK has passed the 14 million barrier for the first time, according to the latest results from Internet monitoring company NetValue.
In July, 37.2 per cent of households were connected to the Internet, with 14,066,000 individuals logging on from home.
Men made up 59 per cent of users, and 41 per cent of users were female. Under 15s accounted for 7.9 per cent of users, whilst 5.2 per cent of all users were ‘silver surfers’, aged 65 and over.
The most visited website during the month continues to be msn.com, with dell.com the most active advertiser.
Friendsreunited.co.uk, the site that reunites old school friends, has become one of the fstest growing sites on the Internet in the UK. The website grew from 97,000 unique home visitors in May to 542,000 unique visitors in July.
The success of school reunion sites in the UK mirrors the success of these sites in the US, where classmates.com was visited by 16 per cent of all home Internet users during July.
Although registering details on Friends Reunited is free, a quarter of visitors during the month also went on to make a secure connection on the website, suggesting that they paid the fee required to actually contact other members.
”A good idea can still take off at enormous speed on the Internet”, NetValue’s Alki Manias said. “This success story shows the power of word of mouth on the net”.
Women made up 40 per cent of visitors, 72 per cent were aged between 25 and 49, and 20 per cent were professionals. Visitors spent an average of 29.9 minutes on the site during the month, up from 20.7 minutes in May.
