Veterinary market leader, Vetstream engages Volt Europe to web-enable services for veterinary community

Volt Europe, the IT services provider, has won a major contract from Vetstream to web-enable Vetstream's veterinary information repository. Leading European XML-based web content management software provider Tridion will act as the content management partner for the deal. Volt Europe Solutions will provide Vetstream's subscribing veterinary surgeons with a subscription-based facility that will give them access to vital clinical information at the instant it is required. Added accelerated access to relevant information will be gained through site personalisation with the system presenting each subscriber with a customised welcome page based on preferences. Further performance enhancements will be achieved through the new system's content creation and content management features.

Vetstream is an award-winning supplier of information services to the veterinary market. Using CDs, it provides veterinary practitioners with comprehensive and user-friendly information that helps them to work more effectively. Vetstream's information is provided by some of the world's leading veterinary clinicians and covers all body systems, drugs and disciplines relating to dogs, cats, rabbits and horses through their products Canis, Felis, Lapis and Equus, respectively.

Information is structured to complement the way vets work, from presenting problem through to laboratory testing, diagnosis and drug selection. Currently this information is only available via CDs, which can be ordered through the web. Volt Europe will develop a system that will make the information itself available on-line as well as on CD, giving the veterinarians a choice of methods for accessing instant, up to the minute information. No matter how complex or unusual the problem, vets will then be able to access a complete guide for diagnosis and treatment instantly, 24 hours a day. Crucially, the system will keep the content secure from being copied.

In addition to giving clients much greater flexibility and speed in the choice of services and products, Volt Europe Solutions will also enhance Vetstream's internal production processes. Volt will build an automated workflow for editorial processes and ensure that, whilst information will be available from multiple media, only one editorial process will be necessary to create the data. The system enhancements will also give Vetstream the ability to provide multi lingual versions for editorial and publication purposes. It will also enable non-technical, remote authorised authors to create and send content to Vetstream.

Central to the success of the new Vetstream offering will be an XML-based web content management system provided by leading European provider Tridion. Tridion's DialogServer will enable an ease of contribution of content from providers in dispersed areas. For example, over 300 veterinary experts will be providing content for the site. Experts prepare their contributions using MS word on their own computer and through DialogServer's formatting process this content will be converted to XML format ready to be edited and submitted to the website. The contributors therefore initiate the workflow process which results in the editorial team publishing the content onto the web.

Jeremy Davies, Vetstream's MD said, "We chose Volt Europe to undertake this work for a number of reasons. We felt they understood our business needs and we were impressed by their experience and skills with the range of technologies involved. We also felt they offered a good business-focussed IT solution. Tridion was the only company to prove they could easily set up an advanced workflow publishing process with the assurance of quality control; and this was the primary reason for the choice of Tridion as the web content management partner.

"Vetstream has a reputation for providing expert, impartial information to our user community. This project will deliver many benefits in terms of speed and choice to our clients. Volt's team has impressive project management credentials which we believe will ensure that all requirements of the project will be delivered on time and to budget."

The Director of Volt Europe Solutions, Bill Ward said, "We are very excited about this project. Vetstream is a well-respected supplier to the veterinary community and we are very pleased to be working with them. We have put in place a highly skilled team to deliver this strategic service and we look forward to working with them over the next nine months."

The first phase of the project was completed at the end of March 2001 when a prototype was delivered for demonstration at the British Small Animals Veterinary Association (BSAVA) at the I.C.C. in Birmingham. Other key dates will be the end of September when the workflow and new editorial processes will be delivered and the end of December when the fully web-enabled Canis is due for launch. The web versions Lapis, Felis and Equus are due for delivery in 2002.
