Pinacl Wins Queen’s Award for International Trade Tuesday 28 August 2001 PDF Print 28/08/01 – Rhyl, North Wales, UK – The optical fibre cable group of Pinacl Ltd., a part of Tyco Electronics, announced today it has won a Queen’s Award for International Trade. This award recognises “outstanding achievement in international trade, resulting in substantial growth in overseas earnings and in commercial success”. Pinacl manufactures fibre optic cable for data and telecommunications applications. Main markets for the company are in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Its focus on exporting began in 1994 when Pinacl’s share of the UK fibre optic cabling market was over 20% and exports represented less than 10% of sales. The company set itself the ambitious target of achieving 50% of its revenue through overseas sales by the year 2000. This was in order to continue the growth of Pinacl as a ‘worldclass’ fibre cable manufacturer. The company achieved 62% in overseas sales by March 2000, exceeding its goals. Sara Branch, business director of the Pinacl fibre optic cable group “We have successfully overcome barriers with languages, exchange rates, logistics, specifications & cultural differences to win this award. By offering a specialised service - a comprehensive range of bespoke and pre-designed cable, a unique partnership approach and dedicated account teams - we are confident of even greater export success. As a turn-key supplier for all data and telecommunications fibre cabling we can deliver the right cable infrastructure in the right timescale and at the right price. This is critical for success in the EMEA data & telecommunications markets. We can now react more rapidly to customer demand, reduce lead times and offer a broader range of niche products including river, aerial and steel wire armoured cabling.” This success has also seen an investment of over £2 million and an extension to the manufacturing plant, creating 50 new jobs. The investment continues, with another ‘springboard’ added to the success story. Christian Struever, director operations & business development EMEA at Tyco Electronics; “This award underscores that there are no boundaries to Pinacl’s ability to successfully target and win business. Pinacl’s outstanding optical cable expertise strengthens our established technology leadership position and enhances our existing datacom and telecom product offering. They will be an important part of our continued success in EMEA and other regions.” Charles D. Fox, general manager, at Tyco Electronics; “Pinacl’s achievement of a Queen’s Award is a great honour but not a great surprise. The company qualities that the award recognizes are the same that grabbed our attention. With the newly combined strengths of Pinacl and Tyco Electronics, we are extremely well positioned to extend Pinacl’s export success to other regions of the world.” Background Information The optical fibre cable group of Pinacl is dedicated to the manufacture and sale of the highest quality fibre optic cables for both telecom and data communications.
