Industry-Leading Speed & Security of Auspex’s Bilingual File Sharing
Will Expedite Development of Aprisma’s Fault Isolation Solutions

Santa Clara, CA, August 29, 2001 — Auspex Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: ASPX), a provider of Network Attached Storage (NAS) solutions, announced today that Aprisma Management Technologies has selected an Auspex NetServer enterprise file server to streamline cross-platform development of ongoing upgrades to its SPECTRUM® infrastructure management software. The 1.2-terabyte Auspex system purchased by Aprisma will enable the software company to divide development labor between Windows and UNIX teams, store all source code on the storage appliance, and merge code from both platforms in each software build through Auspex’s bilingual capabilities.

Aprisma turned to the Auspex file server in part because leading competitors lacked Auspex’s native bilingual support. Competitive systems either were unable to provide heterogeneous file sharing at all or only through emulation software, producing performance penalties as well as potential difficulties in cross-platform file locking. Auspex’s OneWorld™ view of UNIX and Windows files automatically synchronizes security and permissions on both platforms, including setting locks that prevent users on either operating system from writing to a file when it is in use.

Other factors in Aprisma’s selection of the Auspex file server included scalability, an Auspex-exclusive parallel local backup capability that is expected to slash as much as 18 hours off Aprisma’s previous 24-hour backup cycle, and the difficult deployment and repeated failures experienced by Aprisma’s parent company — Cabletron Systems — with equipment from another leading storage solutions provider. Auspex’s support programs, including a policy of working with customers to optimize their networks, also influenced the decision.

“Auspex offered important technical advantages over the other file servers we evaluated, particularly in its support for our mixed Windows and UNIX development environment,” said Brenda Hanson, CIO of Aprisma Management Technologies. “We considered other systems that claimed to provide heterogeneous file sharing, but no other vendor had the architecture or the track record to seamlessly and securely pool code developed on both platforms each time we do a software build. That capability is crucial to our development process, so Auspex was the clear choice.”

Aprisma’s SPECTRUM infrastructure management solutions provide out-of-the-box, root-cause analysis to intelligently manage an organization’s entire network and systems infrastructure. As corporations strive to maintain overall network performance with limited staff, SPECTRUM’s fault isolation capabilities empower managers with pinpoint accuracy to identify network infrastructure problems down to the actual device and port level. This in turn allows managers to immediately bring systems back on line, in lieu of wasting time sifting through hundreds or even thousands of trouble tickets generated by off-line devices to determine the actual network problem.

“For customers like Aprisma who are involved in software development, Network Attached Storage is acknowledged to be the best storage strategy, but different NAS solutions have different capabilities, particularly when it comes to sharing UNIX and Windows data,” said Mike Sutkowski, Vice President Sales, Eastern Region, for Auspex Systems. “Aprisma’s selection of the Auspex NetServer demonstrates that Auspex is the appropriate platform for enterprises with code management, R&D simulation and other software development needs.”

Auspex file servers are used by enterprises in a wide variety of industries to optimize storage management infrastructures and provide fast, reliable access to multi-terabytes of consolidated UNIX and Windows data. The company’s new NS3000 series scales up to 68 TB of storage on a single server and offers file serving power exceeding 19,755 I/Os and 55 MB per second for a single node for UNIX and Windows environments, with proportionately faster performance in full three-node configuration — the highest scalability and fastest performance in the industry. The series also offers a rich range of data management tools for ensuring high availability, high-speed backup and replication, and maximum uptime.
