SafeGuard Easy Features Pre-boot User Authentication, Boot Protection and Hard Disk Encryption For Maximum Security
Utimaco Safeware, European supplier of professional IT security solutions, today announced that the Danish Police Force has failed to crack its SafeGuard Easy encryption and access control software during a recent tax investigation into an unnamed organisation. On the 25th April 2001 the Danish Police Force seized sixteen computers from within the organisation, each of which had been encrypted using SafeGuard Easy. Members of the police force have since revealed that following several attempts to break the encryption code, by themselves and by six private companies, they still have not succeeded.
Holstebro police chief constable Jens Kaasgaard confirmed to popular Danish newspaper “Ekstra Bladet”: “We have not managed to crack SafeGuard Easy by technically breaking down the encryption.”
During the police investigation officers were successful in gaining access to the stored data on five of the sixteen computers, but only by using ordinary police investigation methods. For example, the officers took advantage of a common mistake made by users in choosing familiar names for passwords, such as the name of one of their children. Even so, this trial and error method of searching for passwords was inhibited to some extent by the exponential delay function incorporated in the SafeGuard Easy solution, which activates every time a user enters an incorrect password.
Said Jackie Groves, managing director of Utimaco Safeware Ltd.: “This is great news. The fact that an organisation such as The Danish Police Force that is accustomed to retrieving information was unable to gain access to information encoded with our encryption software, even with external professional help, is a true testimony to the quality of Utimaco’s security solutions.”
Utimaco’s SafeGuard Easy uses highly effective security mechanisms to protect confidential information on PCs and laptops from unauthorised access and theft. These mechanisms include Pre-Boot Authentication (PBA), boot protection and powerful encryption.
SafeGuard Easy key features:
· Boot protection - prevents the operating system from being booted without correct user-authentication.
· Pre-boot authentication (PBA) - the user is authenticated before booting the operating system. This kind of authentication cannot be manipulated or bypassed. Neither keys nor passwords are stored on the PC’s hard disk. All information required to boot the operating system is derived from the password making the use of hard disk tools for analysing the hard disk completely ineffective.
· Hard disk encryption – powerful algorithms (IDEA 128 bit, Blowfish 256 bit) are used to encrypt entire hard disks, including the operating system and external data, effectively filling those security gaps left open by arbitrary file encryption. A user can only access the encrypted information after they successfully logon to the security system. Sensitive data is consequently protected from laptop theft or unauthorised access to the hard disk.
With SafeGuard Easy the systems administrator’s function can be separated from that of the users, for whom the system operates completely transparently in the background after logon. If a password is forgotten, the encrypted data is not lost because the system administrator can assign a new initialisation password.
SafeGuard Easy is scalable to hundreds of thousands of users, making it an excellent base security product for any company, irrespective of size. It can be easily installed using configuration files and implemented across the company via all standard software distribution systems.
SafeGuard Easy is the world’s first security product for Windows NT that has been certified in accordance with the international Common Criteria EAL and is currently available for all Microsoft Windows platforms.
