48% of UK Resellers Expect Buoyant Linux Sales During the Next 12 to 18 Months
48% of technology resellers in the SME sector plan to engage in Linux projects over the next 12 to 18 months. This is the result of a recent survey of over 100 IT resellers across the UK by IBM's SMB (small to medium sized business) division and CRM vendor, Onyx Software.
The survey was undertaken to gauge the UK channel's mood in the current business climate. Participants were asked to assess which applications and operating systems were most crucial to their future commercial success. As a cost-effective alternative to NT, Windows or UNIX, most resellers expected Linux to benefit from the slowdown in IT spending. Other likely winners included B2B e-commerce, Internet security and CRM software.
"By nature, the SMB sector is more flexible than its larger counterparts. Without the burden of legacy systems, many SMB's are considering a move to Linux. The fact that nearly half the channel expects to start selling Linux soon and 38% already have the skills and experience to implement open source projects is encouraging. It suggests that UK SMBs are undaunted by the so-called market gloom in the high-tech sector and are going ahead with their IT investment plans," said Julian David, director of SMB at IBM.
"Despite the fact that Linux sales are comparatively low at the moment, nearly a third of resellers have already been involved in a Linux project in the SME sector. These findings reflect the bullish mood that runs throughout this survey. If this optimism proves founded, it seems that Linux, Internet security and CRM software vendors will weather the current economic storm," said Dennis Allan, vice-president for European operations at Onyx Software.
