Gateway to withdraw from UK, Ireland and SEEMEA

Gateway, Inc. (NYSE:GTW) has completed the consultative process with employee representatives in the United Kingdom and Ireland concerning the company’s proposal to withdraw from its company-owned operations from those markets. The decision also applies to its company-owned operation covering SEEMEA (South Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa), based in Cyprus. Gateway has determined to withdraw from these markets and close the company’s operations in all these countries. Withdrawal from these markets is effective immediately. This decision follows closely behind the closures of its operations in Spain and the Netherlands and more recently, those in Germany, Sweden, Japan and Asia Pacific.

“We’re accelerating our strategy to deliver personalized technology solutions for our target customers, so we’ve had to make market-by-market decisions on where we can achieve these goals most effectively,” said Martin Coles, Gateway’s senior vice president of Gateway International. “We’ve learned first-hand through the consultative process how this decision could make a significant impact on many Gateway employees, and we empathize with their concerns. However, given the current market conditions and macroeconomic environment, at this time we must make such difficult changes to ensure future growth and profitability for the entire company.”

Gateway anticipates withdrawal from both the United Kingdom and Ireland to be complete by the end of the fourth fiscal quarter of 2001. The company is working closely with a number of partners to aid employees affected by the closure. The company is also working with its partners to maintain ongoing customer care and technical support for current Gateway customers in the region.

Gateway continues its employee consultation in the French market regarding its proposal for closure of its operations in France. A statement will be issued once a decision has been reached.
