New Transfer Manager, Multiple Connections And Modernized User Interface Maximize Value Of Leading FTP Client
September 17, 2001 - Ipswitch, Inc., a leading supplier of Internet productivity software for Windows, today announced the release of WS_FTP Pro 7.0, the newest version of its industry leading file transfer protocol (FTP) software. Building upon WS_FTP Pro’s superior functionality and design, a new Transfer Manager in version 7.0 lets users manage multiple concurrent FTP transfers to boost personal and system efficiency. In addition, multiple data connections speed up file transfers and a greatly improved user interface, including a new URL bar, allows users to navigate more easily.
“With millions of users around the world, WS_FTP Pro remains the industry’s most popular FTP client. With version 7.0, we’ve taken a powerful and intuitive product and made it even easier to use,” said Ipswitch President Roger C. Greene. “Long-time FTP users will now be able to access WS_FTP Pro’s sophisticated features with greater ease while newer users will find a more intuitive interface that makes WS_FTP Pro 7.0 very easy to use.”
Transfer Manager allows users to monitor multiple FTP tasks
WS_FTP Pro’s Transfer Manager monitors all FTP tasks, keeping track of connections, file transfers that are in progress, batch jobs and jobs that have been completed. It also allows users to start, pause, re-start and schedule any job. This is of particular value to Webmasters, who regularly transfer a number of files concurrently between several sites.
“WS_FTP Pro’s Transfer Manager is especially powerful for someone like me who is constantly uploading and downloading files for a corporate Web site,” said Tim Jones, a software tester with the IT Enterprise Applications Systems Integrity division of Williams Communications, an industry leading telecommunications carrier. “Tasks are much more manageable and I am much more productive. In effect, I’m ‘multi-tasking’ file transfers and am able to view the current status of each task at any point of the transfer. It simplifies many complex and tedious tasks.”
Modernised user interface enhances FTP process
Significant changes to the user interface will enable users to make quicker connections to FTP sites, help them automate routine FTP tasks and make it easier to transfer files over the Internet. Both its Classic and Explorer interfaces have been updated to include Windows views for easier navigation and new dockable toolbars that users can now move anywhere on a user’s desktop. Also, a new URL bar saves time and provides greater convenience since users can copy and paste URLs directly into the user interface without having to create a new profile.
Faster file transfers possible through multiple connections
Faster file transfers are now possible with the ability to open multiple data connections at once. This allows users to transfer files and browse FTP sites simultaneously and transfer files sequentially or simultaneously. Bandwidth on both the user and server side is maximised, making the overall FTP experience quicker.
“Transferring files over the Internet is a straightforward process if it’s only one file. You’re moving information from point A to point B,” noted Carolyn White, senior research analyst with the META Group. “However, managing multiple files to update a large number of Web pages is a challenging task and the tools used to accomplish transfers should be easy to use and understand. A clean, modern-looking user interface that is easy to navigate is essential. Additionally, the ability to manage multiple tasks makes the overall job a lot easier.”
Firewall editing capabilities make transferring files easier
In addition to WS_FTP Pro’s ability to work with many firewalls, version 7.0 now offers the Firescript Editor which provides the ability to customize scripts to go through additional firewalls. This gives the user unlimited access to files for uploading and downloading.
Secure Socket Layers (SSL) offers optimal file security
WS_FTP Pro 7.0 supports Secure Socket Layers (SSL). When used in combination with a secure server such as WS_FTP Server 2.0, which also supports SSL, WS_FTP Pro 7.0 provides a secure way to transfer information over the Internet. SSL technology encrypts data so, if it is intercepted, it cannot be read. This is an efficient and cost-effective way to provide secure file transfers, addressing the security demands of businesses and organizations, including government agencies that depend on the Internet to access, distribute and manage large numbers of files.
WS_FTP Pro price and availability
WS_FTP Pro 7.0 is available for a U.S. list price of $45, or $39.95 on-line by visiting Ipswitch’s Web site at http://www.ipswitch.com
Current WS_FTP Pro users can upgrade to version 7.0 for $9.95.
