Collaboration enables mobile operators to deliver profitable mobile data services

19th September 2001 – Innovative mobile data software specialist elata, today announced a collaboration with Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group (IC Mobile), to enable mobile operators to deliver, personalise and manage profitable data services to their customers.

elata’s Java-based software platform, elata senses, supports the Siemens SL range of mobile phones and offers the mobile service provider (MSP) a complete commercial solution. elata senses fully supports the 'over the air' (OTA) personalisation and delivery of Java applications (Midlets) to the Siemens SL45i Java phone, plus all other types of data services and applications, such as MP3 and rich media services.

The elata senses solution will manage all device types including WAP and Java phones, through to PDA devices such as Palm, Pocket PC and Symbian OS, with the ability to deliver any type of service or application. It offers subscriber management capabilities, enabling the segmentation of a user base by proposition and the on-going management of lifestyle packages to users in both a ‘push’ (driven by the operator) and a ‘pull’ (administered by the user) scenario.

In addition, elata senses unites the Operational Support Systems (OSS) and
Business Support Systems (BSS) of mobile operators in the world of wireless
Internet Protocol (IP). Consequently, it is able to provide a value based billing environment and a clear CRM strategy to visibly track and manage new services to communities of users. Offering simple integration, the platform represents a low risk deployment for the MSP.

Matt Hooper, Vice President Marketing and Services of elata, said: “The Siemens SL45i Java phone is one of the most advanced and commercially compelling on the present market and coupled with the powerful capabilities of elata senses, our collaboration generates significant benefits to the mobile service provider. The combined technologies provides the operator with a robust solution to create new revenue streams from data services.”

Dirk Hofmann, Global Marketing Manager for Smart Devices within the Information and Communication Mobile Group commented: “We believe that the SL45i now provides mobile service providers with a device that subscribers will be compelled to use for its data service capabilities. As well as supporting Java applications, it supports WAP, has a built in MP3 player plus an office diary and calendar capabilities. Working with the elata senses platform, Siemens can provide mobile operators with a total proposition that will get the most from the SL45i and provide revenue opportunities today.”

elata senses supports both the m-services and MIDP standards today, the key emerging standards for both device manufacturers and applications providers.

Bruce Jackson, Chief Technology Officer of elata, who sits on the MIDP Next Generation Experts Group added: “The implementation of open standards for the industry is more important than ever. The MIDP standard is vital in ensuring a consistent wireless approach for data enabled devices, but still has some way to go to achieve full market adoption. We are therefore delighted that Siemens are
committing themselves to wireless Java as a future standard. The m-services
initiative announced by the GSM Association earlier this year now also provides a significant step, with greater consideration to data services, especially Java. It's now up to the industry to adopt these new standards, consistently and swiftly.”
