Equiinet has moved swiftly to protect users of its market-leading NetPilot secure server appliance from potential exposure to the aggressive Nimda computer virus.

Equiinet software developers have devised a nub for NetPilot customers to download from the Equiinet product web site, This nub blocks downloads with an *.eml extension and thereby prevents contamination by Nimda.

Bob Jones, managing director of Equiinet, says, “This new virus has wrong-footed many of the people who use centralised virus scanning services but Nimda can be blocked by all users of our mark 2 NetPilots. It was important that we acted as swiftly as possible to provide peace of mind for our users and we urge them to rush to the NetPilot web site and download this nub.”

There are more than 10,000 NetPilot secure Internet server appliances installed across Europe, many of them providing secure Internet access and email facilities for small and medium enterprises.

Nimda has been causing numerous traffic slowdowns as it spreads across the Internet. It manifests itself in many different ways and a key factor is that users do not need to open an email attachment to trigger it – simply clicking on an incoming email will be enough to propagate the virus.

Equiinet, based in Swindon, UK specialises in integrated solutions that provide cost-effective, easy, fast and secure access to the Internet. The NetPilot range of Internet server appliances provides all the hardware and software needed for Internet connectivity and networking in a single unit. The founder of Equiinet, Bob Jones, has previously headed three successful networking start-ups: Steebek Systems, Mayze Systems and Sonix Communications. Jones is the current UK Entrepreneur of the Year.
