New media specialists, Westhill Communications, has today launched the SMART website, a content management system, which is set to fundamentally change the way companies handle their online news and information. SMART is the acronym for ‘self maintained and real-time’ and allows companies to regularly update information online without relying on an agency to do it for them.
“As a new media specialist, we have come across many online magazines and content management systems that are either complex or expensive or a combination of both, says Terry Hermon, Director of Creative Services at Westhill. “We found that a number of our clients wanted us to create sites that were easy to maintain and cost-effective. One of the key features of the SMART solution is its ease of use – all editing is done with an interface similar to MS Word – so no complex programming skills are required,” adds Terry Hermon.
With SMART website, a company has total control over information appearing on its internet or intranet site and can make things happen when it wants to with the minimum of effort and expense. Security levels are set to enable only the editor, and designated individuals, to change the content. This can be done instantly from anywhere in the world – as long as they have an internet connection.
The features of the system ensure that news can be given a ‘sell-by date’ to take it off the system automatically and to present the latest news items. Stories can also be stock-piled by keying in start and end dates for the stories to appear. This is particularly useful if the online editor is away from the office.
Westhill’s team design, build, programme and test the SMART website to ensure it fits the client’s corporate style and content process. The whole process from start to finish usually takes around three weeks to complete. From there, the customer usually needs no more than an hour’s training to be able to operate the system on their own. Westhill are on hand to offer support if necessary.
Westhill sees SMART appealing to a wide range of organisations that need regular communication with customers, third parties and staff. The product is particularly effective in magazine format where companies and organisations want to supply customers with a regular source of news. Companies that are currently using the system include Emirates Airlines, as part of their online booking services; BT who use the solution to issue a regular intranet publication for marketing staff and the London Stock Exchange who regularly provide updated information for their pension fund members.
The SMART website is based around the common industry standards of HTML and Microsoft Active Server Pages.
