5.7 TB System Incorporates High Availability Features and the Windows 2000 Server Platform to Enable Innovative Storage Solutions

Maxtor® Corporation (NYSE: MXO), a worldwide leader in hard disk drives and storage solutions, today announced its entry into the enterprise network storage market with the MaxAttachä NAS 6000, a highly-scalable storage server offering capacities up to 5.7 terabytes (TB).

The MaxAttach NAS 6000 establishes a platform for innovative solutions such as e-mail archiving, disk-to-disk backup, and volume aggregation. The NAS 6000’s broad interoperability provides support for Windows, UNIX/Linux, Macintosh and NetWare clients, enabling file sharing among users from all of these environments.

As an enterprise-ready storage solution, the MaxAttach NAS 6000 offers features specially designed for data centre environments, backed by a comprehensive array of support services. These features include redundant hardware components for high system availability, and RAID 5 data protection and Persistent Storage Manager (PSM) snapshot capabilities for high data availability. PSM enables instant recovery of deleted or corrupted files.

"With the combination of scalability, interoperability and on-site service support, the MaxAttach NAS 6000 extends our storage systems offerings into the enterprise market," said Eric Kelly, president of Maxtor’s Network Systems Group. "We can now offer businesses a broad range of MaxAttach storage solutions, each based on the Windows 2000 platform, that can quickly and easily be deployed in data centers, remote offices and workgroup environments."

The NAS 6000 also combines with applications from leading software companies such as Legato Systems, OTG Software and VERITAS Software to provide complete data management solutions. It supports Active Directory and is compatible with network management tools from leading vendors such as Computer Associates, Hewlett-Packard, and Tivoli Systems.

"Companies are demanding improved storage management capabilities and greater value from their storage solutions," said John McArthur, vice president of storage research at IDC. "Maxtor has expanded upon the ATA technology found in workgroup class storage servers. By adding a comprehensive suite of storage management capabilities, the company’s MaxAttach NAS 6000 will address a broader range of enterprise needs."

Operating Microsoft Windows 2000 with the Server Appliance Kit 2.0, MaxAttach systems are the only Windows Powered storage servers that utilise reliability frameworks to enhance operating system fault resiliency:

"IT managers can take advantage of the scalability, availability and reliability of the proven Windows 2000 operating system in the MaxAttach NAS 6000," said Keith White, senior director of the Embedded and Appliance Platforms Group at Microsoft Corp. "With support for features such as Active Directory, Persistent Storage Manager, anti-virus and network management applications, IT managers can feel confident knowing the MaxAttach NAS 6000 offers a robust storage server with enterprise-class features and data protection to meet today’s demanding storage needs."
