3G LAB’s Appcelerata cuts time to market of new applications, ensuring application developers, content providers and network operators can tap into the € billion 3G revenue stream

1st October 2001

3G LAB, the Cambridge (UK)-based multimedia software developer for next generation mobile communications, today launched Appcelerata to speed the development and delivery of mobile multimedia applications, reducing the time to market of new revenue-rich applications. Recent research forecasts that UMTS licence holders will need to generate €45 of revenue per user every month to become profitable(*1) – of which 75% of revenue, the UMTS Forum estimates, will be from data services. It is essential that 3G applications appeal to the 100 million users forecast to be subscribing to European 3G networks in the coming years (*2), something that can only be achieved by rapid application development and evaluation in advance of the full commercial launch. Importantly, developers can begin using Appcelerata right away as it is shipping to customers from today.

Key to content providers and network operator’s rapid development projects is Appcelerata’s architecture which allows development teams to break projects down into specialist areas of expertise, leaving interface designers free to focus their graphical design ability on the look and feel of the applications whilst programmers focus on developing robust code for the ‘logic’ elements of the applications. Speeding this process of building and developing rich and inspirational 3G content enables content-owners to more quickly and effectively identify and generate new revenue streams from 3G applications.

Appcelerata’s fast, standards-based and extensible application development platform enables content developers and network operators to rapidly develop revenue generating applications as they will only have to write the application once to run anywhere across multiple devices using device transforms to re-purpose content for alternative screen sizes. This functionality is ideal for network operators who face the daunting task of supporting a whole number of different shaped mobile terminals all with different sized screens. The whole framework is explicitly designed for integration with many industry-standard Java-compatible databases including for example BEA’s WebLogic.

“With the launch of new mobile multimedia services, content owners will be faced with a headlong rush to get their applications into the market and generate revenue to both win subscribers and to accelerate their return on investment,” said Steve Ives, CEO, 3G LAB. “It is essential that revenue-rich applications can operate seamlessly across multiple device form factors to deliver attractive and compelling mobile applications that will inspire users. 3G LAB is working with both network operators and content owners to develop a vivid array of mobile multimedia applications. Appcelerata is a big step towards ensuring that innovative and stimulating applications are ready in time for the launch of the first 3G services.”

Appcelerata’s standards based Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) development environment provides application development teams with a simple and easy to learn API to deliver a readily accessible set of new tools based on proved technologies. Separated into four tiers, Appcelerata enables developers to develop fast and efficiently compelling mobile applications that deliver consistent behaviour and presentation across device form factors whilst requiring low maintenance overheads.

The four tiers of Appcelerata are:

- The Presentation Tier – Enabling consistent presentation of applications across a series of devices which is essential to presenting a rich user experience and in establishing brand identity. Adding a new client device using Appcelerata is a one-stop operation – no application rewriting is required. All developers need do is plug in a device specific transform.

- The Application Logic Tier – Feeding the presentation tier with data, the application logic tier is responsible for gathering sorting and processing data and initiating resultant processes.

- The Service Tier – Allows persistent data or other services to be changed without effecting the application.

- The Data Tier – Appcelerata uses the service tier to abstract back-end data and integrate billing, personalisation, customer relationship management, location and messaging. The pliable, modular framework is built for the integration of many alternative databases, ensuring you own a future proof, data management component exploiting the ‘Write once, run anywhere’, capabilities.
