Property and Internet lawyers Kaltons has notched up a legal first by choosing digital certificate security from ViaCode in a bid to streamline confidential client communications, including conveyancing.
The London-based legal practice – a specialist in cyber law, technology and property – is deploying ViaCode security to initially safeguard internal communications prior to using it to secure direct client contact by email and through the Web. In addition to multiple client certificates, Kaltons will also be using a ViaCode Web server certificate to protect Web-based transactions.
Believed to be a legal IT first, the certificate security move is seen as particularly important for property conveyancing – an area traditionally tied up in paperwork – according to Kaltons’ senior partner and head of e-commerce Maitland Kalton.
“The Electronic Communications Act 2000 encourages wider use of e-commerce, but assuring the integrity of information transfer between client and legal representative is a major concern,” he says. “ViaCode’s certificate-based security is a proven solution with the clout of the Royal Mail behind it and enables the whole conveyancing process, from searches through to payments, to be done electronically.”
The ViaCode security is part of a substantial investment in IT and e-commerce by Kaltons. The firm communicates routinely with clients by email but until now they have had to accept the risk of unauthorised third parties seeing it.
ViaCode will be providing a service that will enable Kaltons to communicate with clients through its Web site where confidentiality will be equally essential. Currently few legal practices conduct volume business in this way and the move marks a major step forward in Kaltons’ aim to lead in the uptake of faster, electronic conveyancing.
“Our aim is total transparency with total confidentiality. That way we can offer clients enhanced services while making it easier for them to do business with us,” says Kalton.
ViaCode users range from legal firms and other small/medium sized businesses through to major manufacturers and government departments, a profile very similar to Kaltons’ own client base. ViaCode is also providing certificates for three key National Health Service schemes, one of which – the secure electronic delivery of pathology results to GPs – is thought, at over 9,000 users, to be the largest deployment of certificate technology within the UK public sector.
ViaCode digital identities, commonly referred to as ‘digital certificates’ are issued only after rigorous proof of identity and are instantly revocable with immediate system-wide effect. They use full-strength 128-bit cryptography for top security while separate key pairs for encryption and signing mean the digital signatures they generate are “non-deniable”.
