BEA Chairman Bill Coleman to Assume Role of Chief Strategy Officer

High Wycombe, UK - October 2, 2001 -BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS), one of the world's leading e-business infrastructure software companies, today announced that Co-Founder Alfred S. Chuang, who has been serving as the company's president and COO, has been promoted to chief executive officer. For the past two years Chuang has managed BEA's global operations, including engineering, product development, marketing, sales, services, finance, MIS, corporate development, business planning, developer services and human resources. Chuang will work closely with Co-Founder Bill Coleman, who will remain chairman of the board of directors and will assume the role of chief strategy officer.

"Every few years BEA has gone through successful, strategic transformations to better align itself for market and industry advantage," said Coleman. "The best example of this is when Alfred led BEA's transformation after our 1998 acquisition of WebLogic, which resulted in BEA becoming the market leader for application servers. The time is right for Alfred to lead us through the next phase of the company's evolution." Added Coleman, "Together, Alfred and I have met many of the milestones we set forth when we founded BEA, including being the fastest software company to reach billion in revenue, winning more than 11,000 customers and building a worldwide network of over 2,100 partners."
Said Alfred Chuang, "BEA is my passion, and I am very honoured to be named CEO. Since we started BEA six years ago, Bill and I have focused on building the company for the long term. I look forward to continuing our partnership. Our founding company values were to provide value to customers, to attract and retain the best people, and to provide maximum shareholder value. These values are as powerful and as important as ever."

Chuang received his B.S. in computer science at the University of San Francisco and M.S. in computer science from the University of California, Davis. Chuang spent 19 years in software systems research, commercial computing development and systems consulting, including nine years at Sun Microsystems, Inc., where he held several senior management positions, including Corporate Information Systems Director and Chief Scientist of Sun Integration Services. In early 1995, Chuang and two colleagues, Bill Coleman and Edward Scott, left Sun to found BEA Systems, Inc.
As Chairman and Chief Strategy Officer, Coleman will continue to take part in strategic decisions for the company in cooperation with the board and executive management team. Coleman will focus on building relationships with BEA customers and employees, and promoting the core values that inspire BEA's culture.

"We have been working toward this transition for the past couple of years," Coleman said. "As chief strategist, I am ready to support Alfred. Alfred's ability and zeal for operations are unparalleled in the industry. No one is better suited to lead BEA than he."
