Trial of SoftWide provides TIME customers with more choice without the burden of stock

Time Computers, the leading manufacturer and retailer of home PC’s in the UK, is to offer in-store software replication in key stores. The SoftWide delivery mechanism, provided by Tribeka Ltd, is the world's most advanced retail software distribution system. It is anticipated that the initial three-month trial in three stores over the busy Christmas and New Year period, will result in the system being rolled out to the whole TIME Retail network of 150 stores.

Tribeka’s SoftWide solution will provide TIME customers with a choice of 1000’s of different software titles and genres. The system will allow TIME to offer its customers the biggest and most comprehensive range of software provided by any UK high street retailer.

SoftWide provides both a just-in-time and an on-demand delivery solution. TIME will be able to either pre-replicate a constant stream of software stock or to provide customers a full list of titles through a computerised display. Once customers have chosen which titles to buy a ticket is produced, which is taken to the till and scanned. The software is then pressed to CD whilst at the same time the manual and CD cover are printed. Ready in less than 10 minutes the customer is able to take home software, which is identical to the shrink-wrapped retail version, in DVD-style packaging.

TIME will be presenting the results of the trial after its three month run, but it expects that the benefit of having access to so many titles without the purchasing, planning or warehousing expenditure will offer a significant cost saving. TIME customer’s benefit because of the wider range of titles available and the passing on, of expected cost savings associated with the retailer not having to hold stock.

Paul Toms, Tribeka’s SVP Retail, said:

“We are very pleased to have this partnership with Time Computers; as one of the UK’s leading computer retailers they are known for their innovation. This decision represents a further endorsement of the SoftWide technology and underlines SoftWide’s rapidly increasing importance to the retailing of software.”

Michael Flanagan, Time Computer’s Purchasing Director, commented:

“We have stocked some key software titles for the last few years, however we have not been able to offer a huge range because of cost of storage etc. The SoftWide system allows us to give customers the widest selection without the problems of warehousing, storage etc.”
