Bracknell, October 9th, 2001 – Software AG, Europe’s largest system software supplier has announced that Bristol City Council (BCC) has gone live with EntireX. By effectively integrating front and back end systems BCC is taking its first step towards meeting the target set out in the Modernising Government White Paper - to deliver all council services electronically by 2005.
Bristol City Council is using Software AG’s EntireX product as a middleware solution to ensure that mission critical financial data and systems, running on the mainframe and presented in green-screen, are now presented in GUI format utilising the full power of Windows-based desktop units. The middleware solution negates the need for the costly re-formatting and replacement of the existing information, systems and hardware, which avoids the significant commercial risk of interrupted/falling service levels whilst a new system is implemented. This also allows the Council to move to web based systems and a multichannel environment, enabling the subsequent adoption of other client technologies, such as web and idTV in the future.
The first phase roll out involved primary and secondary schools, the second phase - currently underway - Corporate and Central Support Services, and the third phase the individual departments such as Neighbourhood and Housing, Social Services and Environment Transport & Leisure.
Steve Smith, Principal IT Officer at Bristol City Council explains, “The project’s fundamental objective was to replace the out-dated text based green-screen presentation previously used with a far more powerful and user friendly Windows GUI style. EntireX has saved us the expense and risk of replacing the legacy systems while offering us the power and flexibility to deliver the changes demanded by our end users.”
A consultancy “Best Value” report on financial systems influenced the councils strategy in choosing a middleware product. Cost, functionality and future benefit were three key factors in the Council’s final decision, and, as a result of the combination of these factors, EntireX proved to be the best solution.
Steve continues “EntireX has allowed the Council to offer the most comprehensive and cost effective option to its end users, giving them the functionality they require while giving us a solution that not only deals with an immediate challenge but also builds foundations for the future development of the Council’s IT systems.”
Work is already underway on a subsequent project to process financial transactions on the web. EntireX – which can also provide the vital bridge between back-end database and web interface – will play an important part in these plans.
Russell Darling, Account Services Manager, Bristol City Council, adds “The Council is also looking at offering a web-based one-stop information shop for its staff and public, as well as setting up call centres for internal and external customers. All of these projects will rely on the effective analysis, interrogation and transmission of information stored on computer systems within the Council. EntireX will be key to this.”
Russell continues “Software AG’s EntireX has given us a commonality of approach across all our applications. This has enabled us to work both faster and smarter, making us more efficient. It’s made it easier to put extra checks in the system and allowed us to keep the same level of security as before.”
Geoff Cooke, UK Country Manager, Software AG, concludes “Local government is an excellent example of an industry sector with a demonstrable need for middleware. Vast amounts of mission critical data sit on legacy systems that are used daily. For many, migrating all of that information to a new database and hardware platform is not a viable option. Bristol City Council has demonstrated that powerful middleware products such as EntireX can not only provide a bridge between old and new, but can actually increase functionality of existing systems and act as a first step towards future systems development.”
Software AG's customers use EntireX to integrate such mission-critical functions as Electronic Business applications, call-centre systems, and ERP applications. EntireX is built around Entire Broker, a high-performance, cross platform message server that provides guaranteed delivery of application messages, multiple programming language interfaces (C, C++, Java, Cobol, Natural), and remote application management and security integration functionality.
Software AG recently extended EntireX for message routing and transformation and prebuilt adapters for integrating with applications such as ERP systems, CRM solutions, databases etc
