Switch on of new fibre optic network marks commencement of operations for wholesale offering formed by merger with ipsaris

10th October 2001 - Easynet today announces the switch on of its UK 3,500 km fibre optic, broadband network. This marks the commencement of operations for the wholesale division of Easynet following the merger of Easynet Group plc and ipsaris Ltd.

Signalling its intention to revolutionise the UK broadband marketplace, Easynet has also announced a new proposition for the pricing of UK managed bandwidth with flat-rate pricing on E1 (2Mbit/s) point-to-point circuits and higher-speed PoP-to-PoP circuits. There are also no installation charges for PoP to PoP bandwidth up to STM-1 (155Mbit/s). This pricing model allows corporate and wholesale customers of Easynet to better predict the cost of broadband access and offer their own customers simpler and less expensive pricing models.

"The uptake of broadband services in the UK has been hindered by expensive and complex pricing models," said Neil Rafferty, CEO of Easynet Group plc. "The merger of ipsaris and Easynet was designed to create a high-quality and uncomplicated market proposition. The launch of our network and the introduction of competitive flat-rate pricing for E1 circuits and managed bandwidth will give the market a significant boost. It introduces the concept of affordable bandwidth with predictable costs for carriers, service providers and corporates throughout the UK."

The introduction of Easynet's flat rate model replaces the traditional pricing model based on a BT per kilometre structure plus the providers own percentage.

The new UK Easynet fibre optic network has a footprint of 3,500 kilometres with enough capacity to carry all the voice traffic in Britain even if everyone in the country picked up their phone at the same time. It passes through 50 major towns and cities and is connected to the major landing stations in the South and South West UK giving direct connectivity to Europe and the US.

The optical backbone network is fully protected, based on proven SDH and DWDM technology and is underpinned by a leading-edge service management centre (SMC). This configuration facilitates a single management interface and network management infrastructure for the entire network.

Notes to editors

Easynet has radically redefined the value proposition for E1 (2Mbit/s) circuits. By removing the concept of distance based charging and by factoring in the cost of tail circuit connections, customers now pay the same flat rate for an E1 circuit anywhere in the UK. The only condition is that circuit end points are located within 10km of an Easynet PoP. The offering not only simplifies bandwidth pricing for the marketplace but also aids network budgeting and planning by providing a predictable cost to ISPs and telecommunications carriers which in turn can be passed on to their customers.

The concept of flat rate charging has also been extended to higher speed circuits between Easynet's network PoPs. For E1, E3, DS-3, STM-1 and STM-4 circuits, customers again pay a single flat rate price for each bandwidth speed regardless of distance between PoPs.

The final innovation is to abolish installation charges for PoP to PoP bandwidth on the Easynet network for circuits up to STM-1.
