Toshiba’s distributors cut value chain costs via latest e-business community initiative

11th October 2001 - Integration specialist Sterling Commerce today announced it has won a contract to develop and manage a business e-community for Toshiba Europe across its Europe, Middle East and South Africa divisions.

The Computer Systems Division of Toshiba Europe selected Sterling Commerce’s E-Community Development (ECD) solution to automate supply chain logistics between its plant in Regensburg, Germany, and its trading partners throughout the EMEA region.

Sterling Commerce, a wholly owned subsidiary of SBC Communications Inc. (NYSE:SBC), is one of the world’s leading providers of e-business solutions for global companies and their business communities.

Toshiba is already predicting that the Sterling Commerce ECD solution -which effectively eliminates paper-based documents such as purchase orders, order confirmations, inventory and invoices - will trigger savings of 25 per cent or more on every supply chain transaction. In the future, around 90 per cent of all Toshiba’s transactions are to be processed via this electronic system.

Sterling Commerce will also be working closely with Toshiba and its business partners to highlight the importance of electronic supply chain collaboration and the positive impact it can have on a company’s bottom line. As a result, more than half of Toshiba’s 140 dealers are already conducting transactions electronically.

Heath Williams, Operations & Business Planning Coordinator at Toshiba Europe, said: “Toshiba has been engaged in e-business practices, such as Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), for several years and fully understand the cost savings that can be gained through integrated connections to external partners.

“By using electronic orders on Sterling Commerce’s e-community, we are significantly reducing margin of error as well as overall operating costs, allowing us to concentrate completely on our core business - supplying optimal solutions for our customers’ problems quickly.”

Paul Silvester, VP of Consulting Services for Sterling Commerce, said: “After implementing any B2B technology, whether it is EDI, XML or proprietary file formats, companies mistakenly assume that their e-community will grow on its own. Our experience shows that the only way to grow an e-community is to invest substantial time, money and resource. This is where Sterling Commerce can take some of this burden away - by implementing a plan to personally recruit and enable partners to begin sharing information electronically.”

Sterling Commerce offers a range of software solutions that enable companies to build business partner communities by combining the most effective set of processes, enabling technologies and infrastructure for community members.

Silvester added: “We have been building, managing and servicing e-communities around the world -- with hundreds of global companies -- for more than 10 years now, allowing our customers to focus on the direction and profitability of their core business.”
