As Migration Path To Avoid End of Life Status for DCS Operator Consoles
October 12th, 2001 – Wonderware, a unit of the Invensys Software Systems (ISS) group of British-based Invensys plc, has introduced a “life support” solution that allows distributed control system (DCS) users, whose proprietary operator interface consoles are being discontinued, to replace those operator panels with the automation industry’s leading human-machine interface (HMI) software, InTouch.
The Wonderware DCS console replacement package allows DCS users to continue using their existing operator console hardware, but to extend its life and upgrade its performance by using an InTouch HMI conversion package to port existing graphics and data links with minimal effort.
“Some leading DCS providers have recently announced ‘end-of-life’ programs for the operator software that was originally delivered with their distributed control systems,” said Wonderware’s John Nichols. “While some of these vendors have announced new software offerings, not all of the new software actually offers a migration path to enhance performance. This DCS console replacement package lets these users retain their existing hardware investment and get the industry’s leading HMI software to run their DCS systems – all using a painless conversion process for moving graphics files, tag databases and animation links to the new software.”
In addition to upgrading to a new, more powerful operator interface system, the DCS console replacement also takes advantage of the InTouch HMI to provide new access to a plant-wide, PC-based data historian, computerised maintenance management systems, and the ability to easily interface to more than 700 other control systems that previously were not available via the standard DCS systems. None of these has been possible with existing DCS consoles.
“A major enhancement provided by this solution is the ability to share all control and production information throughout a plant, including wireless applications – which means remote users can even interact with DCS applications via handheld devices such as PDAs,” Nichols added. “This means management can deploy valuable engineering resources wherever they’re needed, yet people will still be able to interact with the central system as needed.”
Wonderware’s DCS console replacement is compatible with DCS systems that include Bailey Network 90/INFI 90; Honeywell; Foxboro; Fisher Rosemount; ABB MOD 300; Bristol Babcock – BSAP; Measurex ODC Modbus SCADA; and Yokogawa.
The DCS console replacement is available now from Wonderware distributors. In the UK, Wonderware’s products are distributed and supported by Pantek, Tel: 0800 015 2169, e-mail: email@example.com
