~Outstanding image quality at new levels of affordability

London, UK – October 12th 2001: Demonstrating once again that its DLP™ technology is rapidly becoming the technology of choice for manufacturers looking to develop market-leading display solutions for home applications, Texas Instruments (TI) (NYSE: TXN) today announced that, at KES (Korean Electronics Show, Seoul, 11th – 15th October), LG Electronics would demonstrate a prototype of a new, 52” screen table-top television using a single chip Digital Light Processing™ subsystem.

The prototype to be demonstrated by LG Electronics (Booth M-031) will feature the stunning image quality for which products based on DLP™ technology are becoming renowned: it is from DLP™ technology that DLP Cinema™ technology was derived, which is delivering images that look better than film at movie theaters around the world. The extensive research and development TI has invested in DLP Cinema™ technology - enabling sharp, bright, clear images to be projected to millions of movie-goers around the world – is helping all TI’s DLP™ customers to deliver the ultimate in image quality.

Like other large screen, DLP™ technology-based televisions, the LG prototype is characterized by its small footprint (just 15 inches front to back) and elegant design –characteristics that are uniquely enabled by the compact, lightweight nature of the DLP™ subsystem.

DLP™ technology has for some time featured in award-winning, large screen TVs from some of the world’s premier consumer electronics companies. What is expected to especially differentiate the LG product from current products based on DLP™ technology with similar screen sizes, however, will be its affordable pricing. TI will support LG and other manufacturers in achieving lower price points by reducing the cost to incorporate DLP™ technology into their products. As a result, a number of manufacturers will announce very affordable products based on DLP™ technology during 2002. No competing technology appears to have the same winning combination of outstanding image quality, affordability and DLP™ technology’s unique ability to enable slim, light-weight, ‘home friendly’ design.

Today, TI supplies DLP™ subsystems to more than thirty of the world's top projector manufacturers, who then design, manufacture and market projectors based on DLP™ technology. There are now over fifty products based on DLP™ technology in the market. Since early 1996, over 750,000 DLP™ subsystems have been shipped. Over the past four years, DLP™ technology-based projectors have consistently won some of the audio-visual industry’s most prestigious awards, including, in June 1998, an Emmy Award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

At the heart of TI's Digital Light Processing™ technology is the Digital Micromirror Device optical semiconductor chip. The DMD switch has an array of up to 1,310,000 hinged, microscopic mirrors which operate as optical switches to create a high resolution, full color image.
