Basingstoke, England – 15th October 2001 - Mountain Solutions, a specialist in backup devices, today launched the ABSplus, the first pocket-sized, fully Automatic Backup System (ABS) for laptop computers. The new device, with up to 48.0GB of storage space, is virtually foolproof, says the company, and simply needs plugging into the laptop to launch a backup.

ABSplus, available in the UK from the end of this month, uses a tiny, 2.5inch hard disk to store data. Unlike tape or other removable media devices, the ABSplus can backup an entire operating system, data files, applications and folders in minutes rather than hours, with a transfer rate of 75Mb/ minute. The ABS automatically launches on insertion, installing the software in seconds when initially plugged into the laptop, with the option for a complete ‘Express’ hard drive backup (or the option to select particular folders).

Each time the ABSplus is subsequently inserted it will only backup those files that have been changed or created since the previous backup. No external power cables are required as the ABSplus draws the required voltage through a PCMCIA type II or type III slot.

“Backup for mobile workers remains a hit-and-miss operation,” said Damian Hessian, Managing Director of Mountain Solutions. “Current solutions are neither convenient or reliable. Our ethos has always been that if something is not easy to use then people will not use it! The ABSplus is designed to make the procedure as simple and secure as possible, weighing less than seven ounces.”

The ABSplus also features instant Disaster Recovery (DR). Should a laptop disk fail, the ABSplus disk may be removed from its housing and installed in the laptop in a few minutes. The laptop is then exactly as it was before the last backup.

For users wishing to upgrade their laptop they have the logistical problems of keeping all of their data and files. The ABSplus may serve as the medium to transfer this data to the new laptop, saving time and money for the IT team and End User. Thereafter the End User continues to automatically backup their laptop. The ABSplus software creates a bootable hard drive, stores files in their native file format, and automatically creates partitions on the ABSplus to compliment those on the hard drive. When the laptop is stolen or damaged the ABSplus backed up data may be accessed instantaneously by any of over 600 laptops Worldwide.

Compatible with Windows 95, 98, Me, NT4.0 and 2000, the ABSplus comes with a 3-year warranty. Prices range from £249.00 + VAT for the 6.0GB ABSplus to £649.00 + VAT for the 48.0GB ABSplus.
