"Device/Appliance Management" solution leverages core competencies of
distributing, updating, and managing software

15 October 2001 - Marimba, Inc. (Nasdaq: MRBA), a leading provider of
systems management solutions built for e-business, today announced
Device/Appliance Management, a proven software management solution for
device and information appliance manufacturers. Vendors such as Intel and
Leisure Link have chosen Marimba's Device/Appliance Management solution to
embed management capabilities into their products, allowing them to
transparently deliver updates to end-points in the form of OS and
application fixes and new features and services. This embedded update
capability will add dynamic services to what are normally static products.

"As we move to a pervasive world, where devices become self-sustaining
appliances, the ability to transparently deliver updates and provide
self-healing technology will become critical," said Jack Gold, vice
president, META group. "Indeed, the level of customer churn will be
directly related to how well vendors of devices and services enable
transparent and effortless utilisation of those devices and services. Such
capability will also be beneficial to the vendor/service provider in lowered
cost and higher ROI, as 35% - 50% of all customer service calls are a result
of users employing devices without current release of firmware or software
applications."

In the device and appliance space, ease of use is a competitive advantage.
Vendors cannot rely on an end-user to function as a systems administrator -
it is incumbent upon the manufacturer to provide a transparent and seamless
maintenance solution. Marimba's management solution enables device vendors
to efficiently deliver and install OS updates, patches, and firmware updates
via the Internet once the device is out in the field - without burdening the
end-user.

According to Duncan Gray, group technology director, Leisure Link, "It is
increasingly important to provide content updates and new games to the
consumer. Previously, the only way to do this was to physically remove and
replace machines when the content became outdated."

Marimba's delivery and update technology reduces time to market by enabling
vendors to release their new products with a core set of features, and then
deliver and install updates to the device transparently once it is in
production. "Marimba's Device/Appliance Management technology supports the
Intel AnyPoint® product line," said Nelson Yaple, director of engineering
for Intel's Residential Access Division. The AnyPoint family of products is
an industry-leading set of high-speed networking products that provide
connectivity and shared Internet access for home, home office, and small
office users.

Device/Appliance Management Solution

Marimba's Device/Appliance Management solution provides manufacturers
self-updating features that extend the life of their products. By embedding
self-update capabilities into their products, manufacturers are able to
deliver new features and services to customers on an ongoing basis after the
original purchase. Marimba's Device/Appliance Management is based on a
small footprint that ranges in size from 50KB to 200KB. A small footprint
management solution is especially important to device vendors using
Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) and needing to embed powerful
self-updating capabilities into their product without consuming valuable
storage space. In addition, the Device/Appliance Management solution
seamlessly updates the operating system on a variety of devices and
information appliances. Operating system updates are complex tasks normally
performed manually by a service technician going on-site or by removing the
device from service.

Build Versus Buy

The Marimba updating solution is field-proven and is currently managing
millions of end-points worldwide. A device vendor would need to devote time
and money originally budgeted for their core product line to design,
develop, maintain, and enhance an update management solution. Since its
inception in 1997, Marimba's core competency has been Internet-based
delivery and installation of applications, content, and their respective
updates.

Speed Time to Market

Marimba's delivery and update technology reduces time to market by allowing
a device vendor to release a new product with a core set of features. Once
the products are delivered with the core feature set, the Marimba Embedded
solution will transparently manage the final update to bring the product up
to the most current revision. Subsequent updates can be seamlessly delivered
and installed to add new features and install OS fixes or configuration
changes.

Reduced Support Costs

In an effort to lower ongoing support costs, vendors are constantly looking
to automate their software maintenance process and avoid manual updating, a
practice that requires that a user go to the effort of actually finding and
downloading the application update from the vendors Web site. Using
Marimba's management solution to implement an automated, proactive software
maintenance will reduce the number of support calls related to known
problems. Another area of support cost reduction is achieved through
Marimba's application self-healing and rollback capabilities that
transparently deliver and install software fixes.

Platforms and Availability

Marimba's Device/Appliance Management solution is currently available in
both Java and Native versions for a variety of platforms, including Windows
NT, Windows 2000, Solaris, Linux, and QNX platforms. Pricing varies based on
number of end-points and network configuration. For additional information
