Largest IT Project for KBL Sees Financial Leader Maximising Value of IT Systems

ManTech Systems Solutions Corporation (MSSC), today announced details of a major database implementation for Kredietbank Luxembourg, the headquarter of the international network of banks and companies specialising in private banking. In support of its ongoing aim to improve its management tools and quality of services for its international clientele of private and institutional investors, the bank is working in partnership with ManTech to implement a conversion of its IDMS databases. Moving from IDMS to DB2, the project is already part-way through its maximum two-year implementation.

At the end of the project, DB2 will be the primary mainframe database in the bank and the number of database management systems will be reduced, thereby minimising the costs associated with developing new applications, as well as removing the constraints imposed by old systems. IDMS is a legacy network database that was only able to offer limited scope for KBL’s continued systems evolution. DB2 from IBM was chosen for its superior scalability and unmatched architectural flexibility, to provide robust database solutions that would perform, adapt and respond to its business initiatives.

KBL’s research found that ManTech was the only company able to offer a solution for the complicated nature of the data conversion. “The professional approach of ManTech in the pilot project was enough to convince us to continue with them. There were financial considerations too. This is the largest IT project that KBL has ever deployed, so we had to be more than 100 percent convinced that we had made the right choice,” says Head of KBL IT, Jean-Luc Martino.

J-L. Martino continues, “We were aware that our existing applications were both robust and functionally rich, so we did not want to have to re-write them to work on DB2. It was therefore both logical and cost-effective to save the inherent value and convert them to DB2. Once converted, they can be developed further as business requirements evolve and change. The business opportunity for a consistent DB2 environment will enable the bank to evolve much faster in the future, making it the most strategic project ever undertaken for KBL”.

As KBL already has an existing DB2 environment, the implementation is being done as an intelligent conversion, which means it is integrating with the existing DB2 system rather than by simply converting to a self-contained one. While this added considerable complexity to the conversion process, it resulted in a superior DB2 system and a far better platform for future application development.

General Manager, MSSC, Alan Parker, says, “A common misconception of implementing new systems is that it is necessary to replace entirely older ones. The intelligent conversion for KBL illustrates an example of getting rid of old technology while keeping the inherent value of existing business functionalities.”
