October 18, 2001 – Intec Telecom Systems, a leading worldwide provider of Operational Support Systems (OSS) for fixed, mobile and IP/next-generation networks, has announced that ITXC, the world’s largest wholesale Voice over IP (VoIP) provider, has gone into production with Intec’s Inter-mediatEΓ” platform for IP mediation. The solution was quickly and successfully integrated into the network with minimal risk, delivering accurate results from the first day of production. ITXC can now effectively bill for voice calls travelling across the company’s global VoIP network, which reaches 349 cities and 133 countries across the world.

β€œWith implementation now complete, Inter-mediatE is already saving us time and money,” says Less Cascio, vice president of development for ITXC. β€œOur network is growing at about 20% a quarter. As a result of that growth, quick response is one of our main competitive advantages. Now we don’t have to spend several weeks analysing the impact of adding a new switch or gateway to the network, because we know Inter-mediatE can handle all of the changes. Intec is the best, most customer-oriented vendor I’ve ever worked with.”

Inter-mediatE, the market leader in convergent mediation, collects and aggregates all of the usage data from the ITXC network and transforms it into consistent records that ITXC can use to produce an accurate customer billing statement. The bulk of ITXC’s network traffic originates on a traditional voice switch, and travels through an IP telephony gateway, across the public Internet and through another IP telephony gateway to reach its final destination. Inter-mediatE’s sophisticated technology can support this complicated process, helping to identify any duplication of data and incorrect information resulting from misconfigured gateways and incomplete CDRs.

NB – a Case Study on ITXC’s use of Inter-mediatE is available from Intec.

β€œAccurate billing has been a big challenge in the fast-growing VoIP marketplace, because the Internet wasn’t originally designed for carrying voice calls, and there is no inherent billing mechanism,” said Jim Meginley, Director of Intec Products. β€œInter-mediatE simplifies the complex process of collecting and billing for IP-based usage data while also providing the flexibility and scalability to ensure that the mediation process handles the unique needs of each customer and the volume of billing data in IP networks.”

Flexibility is a critical feature within the Inter-mediatE software. A scripting language allows service providers such as ITXC to apply their own business rules to the mediation process. In ITXC’s case, Intec’s mediation system is set up to conduct filtering and duplicate record detection so that ITXC’s customers are billed accurately for only the calls they actually make. Inter-mediatE also feeds ITXC’s 7/24 network operations centre (NOC) with data for quality monitoring purposes. In addition, the solution facilitates network expansion through its scalability and its ability to protect downstream systems in the OSS environment from changes in network elements.

β€œCollecting and transforming our usage records is no small feat when you consider the sheer volume of data produced, often in duplicate, by all of our network elements,” Cascio says. β€œIntec’s Inter-mediatE software has a proven track record of handling high volumes of usage records –processing more than half a billion records per day in some major carriers – so we knew that it could meet our bill processing needs both now and in the future.”
