Comverse, a unit of Comverse Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:CMVT), and the world's leading supplier of software and systems enabling network-based multimedia enhanced communications services, today announced that it has been selected by
Guangdong Mobile Communications Corporation (GMCC), a major China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC) operator, to expand its Intelligent Short Message Service Centre (ISMSC).

Comverse will be presenting their SMS capabilities at the SMS Messaging Asia Pacific Summit 2001 this week in Singapore.

This new agreement increases GMCC's capacity to serve 14 million Busy Hour Short Messages (BHSM) in 14 cities throughout the Guangdong province. Currently, Comverse's short messaging solution has been launched in networks supporting an estimated 24 million mobile subscribers.

The Chinese government recently announced that there were 120 million mobile phone subscribers in China at the end of July 2001, making the country the world's largest mobile phone market. The China market attracted 3.8 million new subscribers in July alone.

Comverse's high capacity ISMSC is well suited to accommodate the explosive growth in demand for SMS services in China. It is also future-proof and prepared for the next wave of mobile technologies.

"Short messaging communication has become very popular in China," said Zeev Bregman, Chief Executive Officer of Comverse. "Millions of China's 120 mobile phone users regularly exchange text messages, play simple games, enter contests and download icons or ring tones. Comverse's expandable ISMSC solution ensures that operators will be able to take full advantage of the high growth in SMS traffic."

Comverse provides a complete portfolio of SMS solutions, featuring an ultra high-capacity SMSC, interconnection gateways for cross-network short messaging and an advanced SMS Application Management Centre for unified management of third party content and applications. Moreover, its WML-based Open.SMS interface enables interactive mobile Internet services on any SMS-capable phone. The Comverse SMS portfolio of products offers fully integrated solutions based on open standards with full support for GPRS, IP connectivity, and 3G requirements.

Comverse's distributed ISMSC open architecture operates across multiple sites within the network, supporting SMS growth and scalability in a way that is transparent to all users, administrators and external application providers that access the system. Operators can easily expand SMS capabilities, deploy new applications and add capacity seamlessly.

China Ministry of Information Industry has granted a Network Access License to Comverse for its ISMSC. CMCC and China Unicom have also placed Comverse on their approved vendor lists for short messaging services.

Comverse has been operating in China since 1993 and has offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou with research and development centres in Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
