Proactive network management reduces downtime
23 October, 2001 – Sanctuary Housing, one of the UK’s leading housing associations has selected the TeVISTA next generation network management system from Chevin to baseline its network performance, reduce downtime and monitor network activity centrally across the organisation using Chevin’s unique High Speed Remote MONitoring (HSRmon) protocol, specifically designed for distributed networks.
TeVISTA has been deployed at Sanctuary’s headquarters’ in Hertford with visibility agents installed at key points of the network. The network connects 60 sites geographically dispersed throughout the UK and has more than 700 users, including teleworkers.
Sanctuary’s housing management system has to be accessed via the network so total network availability is critical to the organisation. Most of the 700 users access the housing management system using a Windows Terminal Server and rely on having fast and timely access to data as it changes throughout the day. But prior to using TeVISTA, data updates were often too slow for acceptable use and servers and routers crashing was becoming a regular problem.
“Our previous network management system, which relied on polling devices for statistics on network activity, was exacerbating problems. The added traffic burden on the network created when polling for data to identify problem hotspots on the network was ironically slowing down connections and causing new problems for us. Monitoring remote network use is much more realistic after deploying TeVISTA as the statistics gathering affects the link less than before”, said Colin Williams (Network Manager), at Sanctuary Housing.
Sanctuary used TeVISTA to undertake a baseline analysis across its network and is now able to use healthcheck reports provided by TeVISTA to identify irregular patterns in network activity to help the network administrator foresee potential problems and take action before users are affected.
“Using TeVISTA to baseline our network allows us to be more proactive in managing it. Looking at patterns of usage and extrapolating trends in network activity has helped us to isolate problems faster and reduce downtime. The organisation is also growing rapidly and TeVISTA will be a useful means of planning for our future capacity requirements, ” added Williams.
Using Chevin’s HSRmon protocol, management of remote networks is achievable over links as low as 9.6kbps by significantly reducing the traffic overheads created by traditional management systems. TeVISTA is designed to provide a real-time overview of network performance across WANs, including critical features of network activity such as bandwidth utilisation, number of broadcasts and multicasts, number of conversations taking place on the network and the number of protocols being used all of which can affect network performance.
“In the past, real-time management over lower speed WAN links wasn’t a viable option. Even getting your hands on a detailed view of a LAN was a headache,” said Chevin’s CEO, John Earley. “Today, TeVISTA has overcome both these hurdles but old habits die-hard and organisations continue to struggle with multi-module packages still relying on outdated standards. With TeVISTA, network management has moved on from purely helping to solve problems to preventing them and the industry needs to embrace this change.”

About Sanctuary Housing
Sanctuary Housing, one of the largest Housing Associations in the UK, has a turnover in excess of £110 million, 33,000 properties in management and over 1,000 staff. Central to the association’s continuing success is the application of technology solutions to improving business processes and customer services. TeVISTA enhances our ability to proactively manage our network and continue to meet the demands of more than 700 users.
Chevin is a leading provider of innovative software systems that enable organisations to manage and optimise their mission-critical networks. Its flagship product, TeVISTA, is platform-independent and gives a real-time overview of everything that is happening on the network as well as historical reports. All sizes of distributed networks can be managed remotely through intuitive graphical interfaces. Likely problems can be anticipated and avoided so that downtime is prevented, and network capacity can be scaled to meet demand.
Chevin was founded in 1989 and has offices in Europe and the US. Its software provides solutions for organisations whose business success depends on the effectiveness of their network and who find ease of use and a low cost of ownership particularly appealing. Customers include telcos and service providers, blue-chip companies, e-businesses and medium and large enterprises. Users of Chevin technology include AT&T, BT, ICL, British Gas, Siemens, Securicor and Reuters.
