Internationally recognised, independent, antivirus programme test organisation recommends HouseCall

Marlow, England, 23rd October 2001 - Trend Micro (Nasdaq: TMIC, TSE: 4704), a worldwide leader in network antivirus and Internet content security solutions is pleased to announce that its online scanner, HouseCall, has gained first place in a recent test of free online scanners. The test was conducted by the independent test organisation, AV Test, which tests antivirus software at regular intervals for magazines. This latest test was carried out on behalf of a leading German publication, PC Welt.

AV Test examined six online scanners, all free tools offered by established antivirus vendors. The object of the test was to determine the efficacy of these tools; the detection rate of malicious code (computer viruses, Trojans and worms) and the recognition of ActiveX controls and Back door programmes. The test was carried out using 410 ‘In the Wild’ (ITW) viruses , eight ActiveX controls, 1252 Backdoor programmes and 1367 Trojans. AV Test also included other criteria; whether the scanner examined archived and embedded files as well as compressed formats. User friendliness was another important factor, how easy the scanner was to use, how it displayed and stored results, and whether registration with the manufacturer was necessary.

Trend Micro’s HouseCall gained first place in the test, with AV Test recommending its use. The online scanner detected all ITW viruses and recognised over 98% of Trojans and Backdoor programmes, giving the highest score of the test in this category. HouseCall also detected 100% of the Object Link Embedding (OLE) objects presented. Its user-friendliness was praised; its clear display of the number of files scanned and number of viruses found. AV Test complimented HouseCall on its free-of-charge, integrated clean function of infected files. It also noted HouseCall’s additional features, like the creation of back up copies of files before cleansing, its direct link to Trend Micro’s virus dictionary and its link to Trend Micro’s World Tracking Centre (WTC) http://wtc.trendmicro.com/wtc/ , which allows visitors to the site to track the spread of malicious code across the world in real-time.

“HouseCall is now in its fifth year, and is still widely used across the world, as any visitor to our WTC can see. This, in itself, illustrates what a reliable effective tool it is. But to receive such a great review from such a widely acclaimed independent test centre really backs this up, and we are delighted with the result,” said Raimund Genes, Trend Micro European VP Sales and Marketing.
