Cable & Wireless, the global telecommunications group, announced today (24 October 2001) the successful installation of a new Internet protocol (IP)-based communications network at the RSPCA's new headquarters in Horsham, West Sussex.

The new converged network completely replaces the RSPCA headquarter's legacy communications system and incorporates Cisco technology to offer voice over IP (VoIP), IP-based call centres, unified messaging and Intranet access. These services, which will ultimately be extended to other RSPCA sites, will enable the animal protection society to initiate some innovative programmes that should reap the following benefits:

- Realise cost savings of up to #2 million over the next three to five years - funds that can be reinvested in the fight against animal cruelty.

- Prioritise every one of its two million annual enquiries - whether by email, phone or the web site - using IP contact centre, e-business and unified messaging solutions. This will ensure that all emergency calls are answered before any general inquiries and receive the appropriate level of rapid action.

- Make available via call centres and on a new central web site information on animals available for re-homing in the RSPCA's care. This should ease adoption and reduce the number of unwanted animals that would otherwise have to be put down.

RSPCA's Director General, Peter Davies, praised the achievement by Cable & Wireless and RSPCA staff in implementing the system quickly and effectively, "RSPCA's communications were kept intact and major benefits and opportunities for the future have been realised."

"This new network has delivered the true benefits of convergence to the RSPCA, the public at large and most importantly - the animals within our care," said Matt Winckless, technical communications manager at the RSPCA. "As a charity, we are dependent on the generosity of the public and need to make our investments wisely. Cable & Wireless has worked in partnership with us to develop the best solution for our needs. We have undertaken extensive 'proof of concept' trials, and those who have tested the final, integrated solution have been impressed with its speed, ease of use and functionality."

IP Telephony technology is being used from the outset at the 400-strong headquarters as the first part of an ongoing strategy to streamline communications across the RSPCA's hospitals, call centres and branches. The RSPCA is currently trialling Cable & Wireless' virtual call centre, and eventually plans to link all parts of the organisation with an Internet protocol virtual private network (IP-VPN) and use a transactional website, hosted by Cable & Wireless.

Cable & Wireless will incorporate Cisco Systems AVVID (Architecture for Voice, Video and Integrated Data) technology for the new VoIP solution. AVVID is designed to manage the efficient routing of calls over the IP network, which is built upon a Cisco WAN (Wide Area Network) backbone. All voice and data communications will be carried on a single network using Cisco's IP telephony. This has saved the RSPCA £80,000 on cabling costs alone, and enables them to have greater freedom to apply their own resources to manage the solution.

"It was an obvious choice for us to select Cisco's IP Telephony technology for installation in our new headquarters," commented Winckless. "Cisco's solution enables our organisation to operate in a highly efficient manner with many more sophisticated communication tools at our disposal. We chose to put the Cisco 7960 IP phone on every desk because it allows for everything from access to the company directory to the RSPCA Intranet, which will hold information such as animal re-homing information, all at the touch of a button."

TOPCALL has worked in conjunction with Cable & Wireless and Cisco, to create the complete communications solution that integrates and enhances the existing Novell Groupwise network. Working closely with Cisco's AVVID solution, TOPCALL's Unified Messaging Server, enables the integration of all voice, email and fax communication into one message store and integrates into Notes, Exchange, GroupWise or Other existing platform, which can be accessed anytime, anywhere by RSPCA officials via fixed and mobile devices.

"We are proud to be the RSPCA's partner of choice in what will be one of the most sophisticated IP installations in the UK," added Doug Loewe, Cable & Wireless president, Enterprise Markets. "Through our partnership with Cisco and TOPCALL, we have demonstrated the real potential of IP to deliver cost-effective, integrated and flexible communications that can revolutionise the way an organisation does business. We look forward to working with all parties to extend IP communications across the whole of the RSPCA, so that they can support the ever-increasing demand for their invaluable work."
