Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe announces Orchid Thursday 25 October 2001 PDF Print London, October 25 2001 – Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe has announced the MB86292 "Orchid", the latest family member of the company’s extensive range of graphic display controllers launched over the last two years. The new “Orchid” chip incorporates an interface for up to 32MB of external video memory to suit those applications which demand higher memory storage. Apart from this external memory facility, “Orchid” shares all the same facilities as the previous “Scarlet” graphic display controller, including video input functions, scaler and geometry processor. “Orchid”, which is optimised for vehicle navigation systems which require video input features, consumer information processing systems and arcade game applications, also derives the concept of display layers, 2D/3D rendering functions and other features from the established "Cremson" and "Scarlet" graphic display controllers. Either Fujitsu’s FCRAM or SDRAM external memory devices are suited for use with “Orchid”. The external video input can be used to capture video signals according to the standard RBT-ITU656 YUV4:2:2 format. Picture-in-picture functions are supported for video image display, via the dedicated W-layer and the integrated flexible video scaler enables the adjustment of video input format dimensions. “Orchid” is capable of performing numeric calculations for graphical operations via the on-chip geometry processor, which supports functions including Affin-conversions, model-view-projections and 3D-clipping operations. “Orchid” has RGB digital outputs for display connections. All drawing functions, display list-formats and software functions are binary compatible to the MB86290A "Cremson" and MB86291 "Scarlet" graphic display controllers. The MB86292 “Orchid”, together with a development system, the MB86292-EB01, consisting of a PCI adapter card for functional evaluation and software development, will be available during Q4 2001.
