CABLE & WIRELESS GAINS REVENUE PER CUSTOMER INFORMATION IN MINUTES NOT DAYS WITH HYPERION ESSBASE

LONDON, UK. October 29, 2001 – Cable & Wireless, a leading £9billion global Internet and telecommunication services company, has reduced the time it takes to gain revenue by customer reports from four days to literally minutes through the use of Hyperion Essbase, the industry-leading analytic technology.

Cable & Wireless specialises in providing services to business customers in eight market segments in 70 countries throughout the world: Internet service providers; content providers; smaller businesses; corporates and governments; dot com companies; global enterprises; carriers and mobile operators. Its services span traditional voice to more complex data and IP services, such as web hosting, e-commerce solutions and integrated communications services that are transforming its customers' business models.

As with most businesses today, Cable & Wireless is thus seeking to harness a wide variety of data sources to gain a better understanding of its customers. Through the use of Hyperion Essbase, Cable & Wireless has a powerful, strategic analytical framework for enterprise management reporting, analysis, modelling and planning. Because it supports multi-user read/write access, large scale data capacity, robust analytical calculations, rich attribute analyses, and sophisticated OLAP queries (all delivered via a Web-centric architecture across multiple open hardware platforms), Hyperion Essbase provides Cable & Wireless with intuitive multi-dimensional data navigation and consistent, rapid response times in network-centric computing environments.

For a telecommunications and Internet business of the global stature of Cable & Wireless, metrics such as volume of minutes and revenue by customer are of crucial importance.

According to Richard Peel, Cable & Wireless Director of Financial Development: “One of our key goals in helping to improve the effectiveness of our business reporting and planning processes was to reduce our reliance upon spreadsheets to actually generate the reports we needed. Prior to deploying Hyperion Essbase, we were using nine Excel spreadsheets to produce revenue by customer reports which took 4 days to generate. Not only this, but we found we were spending too much time, effort and resource on maintaing these unwieldy spreadsheets. With Hyperion Essbase, we are able to generate these reports within minutes, not days. It has also provided us with a single reporting solution that will allow us to increase the number of users who can access and make use of this information.

“Another key benefit of utilising Hyperion Essbase was that it allowed Cable & Wireless to take data from a wide variety of disparate sources (such as SAP) and provide a far truer picture of the particular metric being analysed. This is a classic example of how Hyperion Essbase brings the power of multi-dimensional analysis to the desktop while maintaining the data integrity of a shared data set and analytical calculations. As in the case of Cable & Wireless, extremely large data sets of actual (flat files, relational tables), projected (spreadsheets) and derived data can quickly be consolidated and viewed. Many different relationships between data, including measures such as variances, ratios and allocations can be analysed rapidly.

Continues Peel: “When looking at revenue by customer, we have 47 different billing feeds that we need to take into account. Hyperion Essbase allows us to input the required data from all of these sources and analyse to provide a holistic view of revenue by customer.”

Peel also cites the support received from Hyperion as a key factor in delivering better value to the business. “Having Hyperion personnel who genuinely understand our business both from a technology and commercial perspective has been a great boon for us. Not only this but, Hyperion’s commitment to working with other key technology suppliers to us, such as IBM and Siebel, has proved to be of immense value.”

Looking to the future, Cable & Wireless will be seeking to extend the use of Hyperion Essbase beyond the 400 users in finance to a broader range of users within the business such as product and account managers. Again, the ability of Hyperion Essbase to scale in this way is seen as delivering greater value to Cable & Wireless.

Concludes Peel: “Ultimately we need to ensure that our users have the fastest speed of information retrieval as well as a familiar interface that removes the need for costly retraining. We want people spending their time on value added analysis rather than consolidating spreadsheets. On all counts, Hyperion Essbase delivers what we need.”
