Abstracts of Korean Patent applications included into leading database

Derwent Information has announced that comprehensive abstracts of Korean patent applications are to be included into its market-leading database - the Derwent World Patents Index - for the first time.
Korea is viewed by many as a key innovator of new technology and is home to many market-leading companies such as Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Electronics and LG Electronics. This year alone, the Korean Intellectual Property Office expects nearly 96,000 applications to be published – making this information vital to companies wishing to stay abreast of new, innovative technology and those who wish to monitor competitor activity.
Key patents filed in Korea chart the development of companies working in groundbreaking industries such as semiconductors; manufacturing; telephone and data transmissions; broadcasting, radio and line transmission systems; audio and video technology, computers and circuits. Approximately 66 per cent of Korean patents are domestic filings and Derwent’s research has shown that around 70 per cent of Korean patents do not have a foreign equivalent – making the Derwent World Patents Index unique in its ability to track vital industry information.
Rob Willows, Director of Intellectual Property Services at Derwent Information, said: “We are delighted to announce the addition of Korean patent abstracts into Derwent’s value-added patent information database. The Derwent World Patents Index is an essential component of any patent portfolio with 80 per cent of information disclosed that does not appear in any other published source.
“Whether used to monitor competitor activity, for guiding Research and Development spend, charting potential licencing opportunities or for gaining an insight into future trends, this database makes a vital contribution to any business strategy.”
Mr Willows continued: “Our research shows that 17 per cent of all patents filed at the Korean Patent Office are from Japanese companies, such as NEC Corporation and Mitsubishi. 10 per cent of Korean patents are also filed from US companies such as IBM, Lucent and 3M – making this resource invaluable to global companies wishing to track new innovations and technology.”
