Siemens, in cooperation with Materna, offers new solution for multimedia messaging services

Munich and Dortmund - 5th November 2001 - The Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group (IC Mobile) has added multimedia messaging to its mobile data services portfolio. In GPRS and UMTS mobile networks, colour images, video clips and music can be sent via mobile devices. In this context Siemens has formed a partnership with Materna GmbH, Dortmund. This leading SMS company will make its multimedia messaging platform available to Siemens as basis for applications in customer-specific projects. This will allow mobile operators, ISPs (Internet Service Provider) and ASPs (Application Service Provider) to get at Siemens a complete solution from a single source for early entry into the highly attractive multimedia messaging market.

“Multimedia messaging is regarded worldwide as the application that will build on the success of SMS and drive business with mobile data services forward in 2.5G and 3G networks”, explained Thorsten Heins, President of Solutions within the Information and Communication Mobile Group. “The new messaging solution, which we are offering in cooperation with Materna, includes business consulting and customizing, in addition to products and their seamless integration into mobile networks.”

“Over recent years, Materna has gained a worldwide leadership role in SMS services. Now short messages are going multimedia”, explained Helmut an de Meulen, CEO of Materna. “We are confident that through our partnership with Siemens IC Mobile we will also achieve market leadership in the field of platforms and applications.”

The innovative architecture of the multimedia messaging solution and its capability to integrate any existing SMS centres provide excellent investment security. Materna’s expertise in SMS value-added services and the operation of SMS centres have proved to be a decisive advantage in product development. Since the multimedia messaging solution is also compatible with the 3GPP MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) standard, network operators can be sure that their multimedia messaging offering works across networks and can easily be integrated into third-generation networks.

This highly scalable solution allows early market entry while keeping investment low, and it will grow with increasing subscriber numbers, even in large networks. Since it supports different billing models for prepaid and post-paid subscribers, providers have every conceivable freedom for designing their multimedia messaging business models. In this regard, operators and providers can also benefit from Siemens’ wide-ranging experience in the area of mobile payment.

Siemens and Materna have been cooperating for some time now to drive the development of mobile data services forward. This includes, for example, cooperation on forums and standardization committees such as MMS/3GPP, the WAP Forum, the UMTS Work Group and the ASP Consortium.
