Fathom™ improves availability and manageability of Progress®-based solutions and extends market opportunity
for Progress database to largest corporates

BEDFORD, Mass.- Nov. 5, 2001 - The Progress Company, a business unit of Progress Software Corporation (NASDAQ:
PRGS), today announced the release of Progress Fathom for Management, a new product that greatly increases
availability and manageability of the Progress OpenEdge™ platform through proactive monitoring, alert
notification and trend analysis. Fathom for Management further improves Progress’ low total cost of ownership
in the corporate database arena.

Fathom brings enterprise-class management tools not only to mid-market/SME organisations where Progress is
already strong, but together with its renowned total low-cost of ownership, makes the Progress database a more
attractive proposition for the largest corporates.

Justin Wright, managing director of Progress Software in the UK said: “In larger accounts, Fathom fits within
the enterprise management strategy where the needs are met today with tools such as Computer Associate’s
Unicenter, HP’s OpenView, IBM’s Tivoli and BMC’s Patrol. For smaller organisations unable to cost justify the
investment in such solutions, Fathom offers a persuasive value proposition.”

Based on Progress’ extensible OpenEdge(TM) e-business platform, Fathom makes the tasks of configuring,
diagnosing, monitoring and managing Progress-based applications easier with its intuitive browser-based
application. It offers customers rich management functionality, such as:

~ Centralised application management through a browser-based console that database administrators (DBAs) can
access locally or remotely;

~ Automatic alert notification and processing that reduces unscheduled downtime by enabling proactive
corrections to be made before situations such as the lack of system resources (memory or disk space) becomes

~ Trend analysis of the information that Fathom captures to enable capacity planning;

~ Rapid deployment through discovery wizards that guide customers through the entire installation process;

According to the Aberdeen Group, “Beyond knowledge of its own product set, Progress brings to Fathom an
understanding of the challenges faced by its customer base in day-to-day operations. Moreover, the
implementation of Fathom will no doubt improve what is already a strong total cost of ownership (TCO) and
embedded database leadership story for Progress.”

(See press release on Aberdeen Study; IDC’s Embedded Database press release; and Gartner’s Embedded Database press release ).

“The potential impact of Fathom is tremendous, both for Progress ISVs (independent software vendors) and end
users,” said Justin Wright, managing director Progress Software. “Fathom caters to any architecture or
business model that benefits from remote application management. We expect all Progress customers, including
corporate end users of ASPen member applications, to realise the cost savings and benefits of proactive
management and failure avoidance from this new suite of Fathom products.”
