Business travellers to benefit from anytime, anywhere access to Internet and corporate networks

Cable & Wireless, the global telecommunications group, today (5 November 2001) announced SONOFON, Denmark's second largest telecommunications company, as a commercial customer of its mobile data roaming service, Cable & Wireless GRX (GPRS Roaming Exchange). With this agreement, SONOFON is further extending its GPRS roaming service, which enables customers travelling abroad to access the data services they are accustomed to using in Denmark. Users will benefit from a seamless, 'always on' connection that is high-speed and secure.

By using Cable & Wireless' powerful GRX backbone, which has been proven through extensive commercial trials, SONOFON has guaranteed IP connectivity for the exchange of GPRS traffic to more than 70 countries worldwide. The agreement is an enlargement of an existing, successful relationship between the two companies.

"We are at the dawn of the mobile Internet age and GPRS roaming is a significant step towards offering our customers the full capabilities of the mobile Internet medium," said Hekan Franzen, vice president, SONOFON. "Cable & Wireless has passed our extensive service requirements and has qualified as a very strong partner. It offers a proven global GRX network, which has been in commercial operation for eight months, together with technical expertise and long-standing experience of our company and the mobile sector as a whole. We look forward to the continued development of our relationship."

"We are proud to announce SONOFON as a GPRS roaming customer," said Andrew McGrath, president, Service Providers, Cable & Wireless. "GPRS, and eventually 3G services, are set to make the anytime, anywhere mobile office a reality, and our IP interconnect services will be a crucial element of this development. A high quality, dedicated network is fundamental to successful GPRS roaming, and Cable & Wireless is in a position to offer mobile operators the most global and most technically advanced GRX service. We look forward to signing up other leading mobile operators in the near future."

Cable & Wireless GRX (GPRS Roaming Exchange), launched in May 2001, uses a dedicated, global Internet protocol-based (IP) network to interconnect GPRS wireless networks worldwide, as they are rolled out. This allows mobile operators to exchange data traffic without having to establish costly point-to-point data links with each of their roaming partners. Cable & Wireless GRX will also support 3G services, when these become available.

Cable & Wireless GRX builds on Cable & Wireless' existing Mobile Carrier Services portfolio and leading presence in the mobile operator market. Cable & Wireless was the first carrier to establish a dedicated Mobile Carrier Services division, and the company maintains commercial relationships with over 40 mobile operators - more than any other carrier.

About GPRS

GPRS is a data bearer service that provides high-speed data transmission and 'always on' connectivity. GPRS data is packet switched rather than circuit switched (i.e. data travels over a network optimised for data traffic rather than voice traffic). This not only means that customers get faster service but that applications such as transmission of email enclosures, which were not viable with WAP, are now possible. 'Always on' connectivity means that, once logged on, customers avoid the repetitive process of re-connecting every time they need to send data, making the mobile office a much simpler reality. GPRS roaming allows users to access GPRS capability whilst travelling abroad.
